The scene was either shot a couple ways or there was one long shot edited two ways. In the film she's nude aside from the newly applied mud.
In the "Making Of" feature, you see her still clothed with mud being applied to her dress.
I suspect they started off filming with the kids decorating her dress with mud. Then they continued filming as the weight of the mud caused the dress to fall away and the kids continued to decorate her with more mud. As the MO pointed out, this was both the climax of the film and the climax of the filming, the director and actress wanted to make sure they got the maximum impact here.
Funny that you watched sky crawlers. I got that one with vinyan from redbox. I thought both of them as being the most terrible choices I've ever made renting from Redbox. Sky Crawlers I fell asleep watching, this horrid movie however I watched and had my eyes bleed after the last couple of scenes. I should have known ever since those weird starting credits...

To the person who called it a 'sexual act', lol. It was weird and kind of disturbing but it wasn't what I'd call a sexual act. Although it was stupid, just like the rest of this pointless movie.

I don't know that it was sexual, but I'm pretty sure that was more about groping than painting with mud. That's what I saw. The kids giggled and I think that was not breaking character; the woman laughed too, probably because the whole scene was so outrageous and probably kind of fun too. Admittedly I've never seen anything like that before.
Anyway, I think it was exactly what it looked like. It was striking to consider - she would have nursed those boys if she could.
Also, I'm sorry watchdogs, but kids grab for breasts. They ain't sacred.

That makes sense as her character was seeking the child she had lost and had now accepted these Lost Boys as her children. And likewise they had accepted her as their Wendy, their Mother.
And behind the camers, yeah, I can see that any of the boys who were close enough probably copped a feel of Emmanuelle Beart's breasts. Their driving emotion would have been pre-sexual though, more akin to a giggly prank.

But seriously guys are you *beep* retarded or something? it is amazing to see that people can't even understand their own deviances, I think Du Welz's intentions were far away from inducing any kind of child sexuality here, I feel that he wanted to show the return to a certain form of pure, primal image of BIRTH... the mud, the children, the nudity, we are here in a notion of rebirth, returning to earth,returning to her son, becoming the mother again.
Du welz leaves the door open to ALL interpretation (in that matter my interpretation is just one in a million and does not pretend to be superior) NOW THIS IS the scary part... you see WHAT YOU WANT and the fact that so many people chose to see children's sexuality is highly disturbing, more disturbing than a scene from a movie could ever pretend to be...some movies lead you to face yourselves (BUG as a recent example), like a mirror, when the first thing you see when you look in a mirorr is a notion of child abuse or child pornography, it is time you start asking yourself serious questions about your own issues.
Ever considered that victims/survivors of sexual abuse might think this scene disturbing?

Whoever writes about the artistic intent of this scene misses the point completely, it was real boys it was filmed with and I doubt they were "lost souls".
Does anyone seriously think this scene would have been filmed if the adult was male and the children were female? I very much doubt it! These kids were asked to touch an adult in this way to make a film. But seeing that it's art and so on and it's not meant to be sexual blah blah that seems to be fine...
