Womanhood in a nutshell, a bizarre and wonderful film

Sorry if I'm politically incorrect, but there is some subliminal undercurrent running through this surreal movie that motherhood is more important to the woman than the actual man to whom she is partnered, and it comes to a dreadful conclusion. It's not pretentious, it's a surreal allegory, and though not mainstream horror, it's horrific.

Elements of this film remind me of various movies and stories:
The Wicker Man (1973)
Don't Look Now
Jacob's Ladder (I thought it was going that way., but it didn't.)
Antichrist

More than anything, the story reminds me of a French book from the 60s called La Montage Morte de la Vie aka The Other Side of the Mountain, by Michel Bernanos, a surreal oddity I read when I was a kid. This book, which I highly recommend, developed my taste for odd and eerie stories and films.

You nailed it with the subject of the thread. Couldn't agree more.
The movie itself follows the bizarre logic of the female protagonist. And it pulls it off! It's briliant.
