What was the significance of the Finnish War scene?

I mean that last one where Max has chased down the Russian soldier and he climbs out and sees all the bodies lined up. What was that all about?

Manus suffered from nightmares, alcoholism and bouts of depression after his experiences in the war, some of which he talked about in interviews. Thus the references back to his Finnish war-time experiences which, the film presents, as the initial source of the problems.🐭
