Apologies to Mr Rakesh Roshan and team

I reluctantly watched Krissh 3's previews today, expecting substandard low quality CGI, but hoping perhaps the story would be good and entertaining. I am not sure why the Roshans edited their trailer as they did, giving a very misleading impression of the quality of CGI and VFX, but I must say I am very impressed with what I saw, especially the climax which was mind blowing. The CGI and VFX is overall brilliant, I was not expecting such finesse and professionalism, this was easily on the same level as the latest Hollywood superhero blockbusters, and in some parts even better and more daring and inventive. I had no idea Red Chillies could produce work of such caliber, it has completely changed my opinion on what Bollywood is capable of technically speaking.

My favourite shots:

Entire climax sequence is fantastic, superb quality resolution, love the scene when Krrish crashes Kaal's lab, and the ensuing fight sequence with the mutants and the fight scene between Kaal and Kaya, love the shapeshifting effects with Kaya, especially the final shapeshift.

Great face off sequence between Kaal and Krrish, smashing through buildings, glass breaking

The fight scene between Krrish and Toad mutant

The lab effects, computer screens, tech gear, gadgets

The virus and how it spreads through the body

I also appreciate, despite the fact that the VFX are inspired by various Hollywood superhero blockbusters, that most of the sequences were original and imaginative.

Overall: Great stuff, can't wait to see Bollywood's own Avatar and Gravity now. Keep up the good work

Thanks a lot for your review. I was looking for a sensible review before deciding to go watch the film. I am Hrithik's biggest fan ever and I told my friends that there is no way I am gonna watch this film after looking at its trailer. Apparently, people are saying good things about it. So, I am going to watch it tomorrow :D Plus, I don't care if they actually used the scenes/characters from other movies. I just wanna see what Bollywood can do with all that technology we have in India.

reply

Oh just to add, if an international version of Krrish 3 is released, please remove all the songs, none of the songs add anything to the movie, they are more like hindrances. Without the songs, the film would have a much more tighter screenplay.

The songs were the only disappointment for me in the film.

reply

I agree...but then it is Bollywood, at least in the sense that the genre of the realm dictates. It is like the wire fighting scenes in so many Chinese movies. Perhaps not necessary, even gratuitous, but mandated.

Plato said: True knowledge comes from the realization that you know nothing. But, what did he know?

reply

totally and 100% agree with you!

they should dub this in english and cut out the songs and some silly dialogs and product placements (krrish3 bracelet WTF!)

if they do, bollywood might get some new respect outside india!

the movie's climax was amazing, its gave tough competition to man of steel and this movie's script was much more coherent

These are the movies krrish 3 has ripped off from, BUT I liked krrish 3 better

amazing spiderman - the first person jumping, hand being seen is a direct copy)
smae movie, the delivery device for the cure, its like the one in spiderman

but amazing spiderman sucked as a movie!

Man of steel - the building breaking fights... but krrish3 had the better script and plot than man of steel (turning earth into krypton using your ONLY ship, bad idea ZOD!)

An Idea is the most resilient parasite - Inception

reply

Not seen the Amazing spiderman yet, so will be sure to check it out. I thought the cure and how they delivered it was original, but from what you are saying, it sounds like its taken fro the amazing spiderman.

I agree with you on Man of Steel, Man of Steel was boring and the screenplay meandered all over the same. It was also very melodramatic. As one reviewer describes it, the entire movie is like a showreel of explosions. I won't lie, I actually fell asleep during the movie and so did my friend! This is a shame, because the effects though unrealistic and overdone, were spectacular. Krrish 3 tries to create the same in the climax, and does a commendable job, but of course Man of Steel effects were much better.

But what they lack in budget, they make up for in creativity. The shot design is very inventive that it makes you sit up and take notice. Like in the climax, when Kaya is flung across the lab from door to door or when Kaal circulates the metal pieces around him at great speed and then hurls it at Krrish.

reply

You are saying Krrish 3 is better script than MOS because turning earth in Krypton with a ship is bad idea with all the kryptonians, actually ZOD, Faoura, and 2-3 more person cant take out earth but Kaal alone(which has power = magneto's power) can take out earth with him alone. Tell how much You are wrong, There were entire army who was actually trying to stop zod, Where is Army in Krrish 3. Some police came, and some media thats it. In MOS there is real life situation, Peoples get killed in Krrish 3 he saves entire City with i think killing one or two persons only. I know MOS wasnt great as it was expected, But saying Krrish 3 > MOS is so wrong in so many ways. I have not seen such a mid-air fight sequence in any movie And Krrish copies it , And Dude i was disappointed the way they copied that sequence. i know in MOS Action was overdone but VFX were too good. now if u say Krrish 3 has better vfx or equal vfx than/to MOS then seriously You are trolling. Even Fifth Element has better VFX than Krrish 3.

You will never have to

reply

Relax, I am not saying Krrish 3 has better effects than MoS. And yes they have obviously taken the inspiration of a mid-air fight from MoS. They have not copied the same shot-design and sequences, just taken the idea, and that is perfectly OK in the creative industry. The matrix bullet time effect for example has been copied ever since in hundreds of movies. The reason one artist may want to copy another artist, is because they think it is good.

I think we can all come to an agreement Krrish 3 is not a rip off of any of the Superhero movies, it is indeed heavily inspired by them. This is probably because there are not that many Indian sci-fi writing, sci-fi has long been the monopoly of Hollywood. So it is good to see another film industry in the world challenging its hegemony. Robot, RA one and Krrish 3 are the beginning of things to come - expect sci fi films made in India to get better and better. As I was saying even China, South Korea and Japan hesitate to try sci fi, the sci fi made in China, Japan and South Korea so far are pretty bad(Natural city, C2Z2, Doomsday book)

Indian filmmakers need to now finetune and hone the sci fi genre by melding Indian filmmaking sensibilities with the conventions of sci fi, including special effects. So far they are struggling to do this, including Krrish 3. Krrish 3 would have been a far better film if it threw out its songs, slapstick comedy routines and the shameless brand advertising(the bracelet scene was just wrong). Indian filmmakers are still treating sci fi as a novelty at the moment, they are not taking it seriously enough yet, so we still need to wait before some serious filmmaker gives us a sci-fi classic like 2001 ASO. For now look at Robot, RA-one and Krrish 3 as experimental.

reply

Well my that comment was for OP. But well now i m gonna tell u how Krrish copied?? which scenes were entire fail and which were not?
1.Krrish lands on under-construction concrete (his first appearance) which i have seen in a game.
2.Krrish jumps as his hand shows up- No question TASM.
3.Again he jumps toward the building again(means he leaps toward the camera)- TASM.
4.He uses pole to rotate and catch the plane and some what spider-man but okay i will ignore that because scene is not exactly like that.
5.Idea of rescuing a plane- Idea of Superman returns okay then too i will ignore it coz its not ditto-copy so inspired as u said.
6.Spreading Viruses- Oh Cmon its like i m seeing World War Z okay then too i will ignore it.
7.He flies with a force- copied Matrix.
Now, I can ignore ur MOS theory too and consider it as INSPIRATION AGAIN!
8.That half cutted building falling - Transfomers-3 (obviously Krrish catches it)
Now, the last part is X-men. 9. Sabretooth, 10. Mystique(actually liked the last transformation of Kaya), 11. Toad, 12. Magneto/Professor x.
13. Krrish catching neck of Cheetah lady(thats what ppl r calling) is from X-men Origins wolverine when Sabretooth catches a mutant which can teleport(forgot that character's name).
14. When Krrish comes for rescue of Rohit and Priya, It was like Shaktimaan Revolving around there.
15. MOS fighting sequence.
16. He couldnt find a job- Spiderman
17. Priya Mehra - Superman okay louis lane is married here!
18. Krrish's statue - seriously now i have to mention thE NAME OF MOVIE- TDKR
I know there are many more sequences copy/inspired from other movies. And I am not aganist copying a sequence, dialouge or whole movie but the point is it should be properly copied.

Great list! also Kaal's car crushing by telekinesis reminded me of Dr.Manhattan crushing the tank in watchmen! :)

reply

WOW! After seeing all the time you spent micro-dissecting the movie, I feel silly to have just sat there and enjoyed it. I should have spent more time looking for reasons to not have enjoyed it.

Plato said: True knowledge comes from the realization that you know nothing. But, what did he know?

reply

@bluzman I have also enjoyed the movie thats why i have also given a 6 but comparing and saying Krrish 3 = hollywood superhero movie in VFX is just so wrong.

reply

How is this a great list? You just compiled a bunch of bundled thoughts together. You don't even support your claims. Just because you found a few similarities with other films, it doesn't mean that EVERY single aspect of the movie is copied.

1) You don't even tell us which game you saw this scene from. Are we just supposed to believe you?

4) How is this even remotely close to what Spider-Man does?

6) Yes, after K3 stopped shooting in May, Rakesh Roshan watched World War Z in August, gathered his team together and redid the entire first-half of the film by adding the virus subplot, just in time for release.

7) What does 'fly with a force' mean?

9) This is actually the first I'm seeing of a Sabretooth reference. Would love to see an explanation.

14) Krrish has done that in the film previously as well. Not a new thing.

15) Read number 6 above.

17) Priya Mehra and Louis Lane are both married, therefore, her character is copied? Her character is nowhere close to Louis Lane.

reply

1. I will tell u from which game it is copied dont flatter urself.
4. at the end of the spiderman he lands on a pole with american flag also and i said its not ditto copy so i said its reference but then too if u think krrish can do gymnastics with an antenna then I have No Comments for u.
6. Not Even World War Z, I have seen Dawn of the Dead, 28 days later and many more virus-full movies. BTW World War Z was made from a novel called "World War Z" which was issued in 2008-2009 and i said its not copy, its a reference but the way they represented was too old and boring. Also World War Z came in June not in august.
7. The way Krrish makes a pose then flies is same position Neo makes a pose and flies in Matrix Reloaded.
9. Watch X-men Origins : Wolverine, when Victor Creed a.k.a Sabretooth catches John Wraith a.k.a Kestrel.
14. So, You are saying Krrish has revolve like Shaktimaan in previous movie, I thought he revolve around siddhant aarya and that was cool effect, if u think that Shaktimaan effect is similar effect then I have no comments for u -_-
15. Krrish's shooting finished in May agreed.. but who said editing, post production, and all the visual effects were given in May? When the trailer comes thats when Post-production gets a green flag. And MOS came on 14 June, so i would not like to comment and explain how they copied coz it gave them 2 months before the trailer would launch -_-
17. When Louis got married in movie?? Are u refering to Superman Returns because if u r then tell u its been rebooted and reboot is called MOS. The only difference is Louis is Newspaper reporter and Priya is Aaj Tak Reporter, and Priya even can announce that Krrish will not save the world at a specific time so dont get in trouble xD. You cant be serious than that now xD

reply

Wow, you either have a very good memory or you are watching a pirated copy of Krrish to catalogue all the shots and scenes like that.

I will give my own list of my fav shots from what I remember:

Grade A*

1. The shapeshifting effects with Kaya were brilliant, these were by far my favorite effects in the movie. The first transformation with her arm bulging up and transforming into the doctors like the Hulk, the second transformation when she attempts to transform by melding into Krrish and the final transformation into the squid like creature. This was all top grade stuff.
2. The opening shot showing the vial containing the virus and the virus infecting the child's body body gradually was an incredibly classy act.
3. When Krrish injects the virus into his arm and the virus travels up his arm

Grade A

1. When Kaal tears the metal pieces telekinetically from the labs walls, circulates them around at high speed and then hurls them at Krrish.
2. When Kaal crushes the car into pieces, throws the pieces at the crowd, turns them around then aims them at Krrish standing on the statue, then Krrish repulses them with a shockwave effect
3. When Kaya(I think it was Kaya) is hurled back smashing from door to door

Grade B

1. The light rays bringing Krrish back to life
2. The light rays melting Kaal

Grade C

1. The mutant Striker, his elongated tongue and fight sequence with Krrish
2. The building and glass smashing effects
3. The collision between Kaal and Krrish
4. The vials of antidote exploding in the sky

Grade D

1. The cityscapes, Krrish and Kaal flying through the city
2. The plane rescue sequence, including the use of the pole to catapult himself onto the plane

I am trying to be as objective as possible. The cityscapes and flying through the city were the weakest CGI, but that is because it very expensive recreating an entire photorealistic cityscape.

reply

1. Which game? Having a live character on CGI concrete is very generic. The context for this shot was Krrish chases the plane(like he chases the kite in the prequel) by leaping from building to building.
2. Krish jump as his hand shows up, possibly they are inspired by the shot from TASM, but Krrish is a different character to Spiderman. The shot you are referring to shows Krrish at the top of the glass skyscraper jumping off with his cape fluttering, that is definitely not in TASM. It is unfair to accuse another filmmaker of plagiarism by simply looking at a single second frame in isolation. If we went about doing this for any movie, every movie could be said to be a copy.
3. Krrish jumps, Spiderman swings through with his web. The effects, shot design and visualization is different. What makes Krrish an original superhero character is his prime ability is to make impossible jumps, and he gets from a place of low altitude to higher altitude by a series of jumps, building up momentum as he does does so. None of the Hollywood popular Superheros do that(Spiderman, Superman, Batman)
4. Ditto
5. Ditto, and the Superman rescue scene was far more spectacular and used more VFX and CGI. The Krrish scene is more simple, the landing gear has malfunctioned, Krrish jumps onto the plane to give it support. The graphics here were sketchy, not terrible, but not too impressive either. Also the interior of the plane and the crowd reaction was skimmed. This scene could have been done much better.
6. Virus spreading is nothing new, it has been done in countless movies for decades, even in Indian cinema most recently it was done in 7aum Arrivu, which I think Krrish took some of its inspiration from, as in that movie India is targeted by a virus that the Chinese government have conspired to bring into India. The original plot angle(at least I think it is not been done in any Hollywood films yet) is how big and powerful pharma companies sell antidotes, but also involved in conspiracy where they manufacture the virus themselves in the first place(this is a popular conspiracy theory)
7. This is vague, what do you mean by "He flies with a force"? ?
8. Krrish does not just capture a falling building, he captures it to save the innocent crowd below and a poignant scene of saving a baby from being crushed, while Kaal pummels him. This was actually a uniquely Indian movie moment.
9. Which mutant character was Saber tooth?
10. Yes, it is obvious Kaya is inspired by Mystique wrt to a shapeshifting femme fatelle, but it ends there. The way Mytisque shapeshifts and the way Kaya shapeshifts are completely different. Mystique is a blue creature, and Kaya in her original form is some squid like creature. The characters are also different, Mystique is an evil character. Kaya is just the loyal creation of Kaal, but has human emotions too and falls in love with Krrish(another unique Indian movie moment)
11. Toad, yeah this was a bit if a rip-off. I agree ice-cream chor angle with the slapstick routine was childish. The fight scene between Striker and Krrish was a not a rip off though, this was original visualization.
12. More inspiration and amalgamation than rip off
13. The "Cheetah lady" moves around in a whirlwind and Krrish captures her, you are relating this to when Sabertooth captures a character that teleports, we can already see a big difference in the characters. So is the Cheetha lady an original mutant character?
14. I have not seen Shaktiman, but from what I understand Shaktiman is a z grade children series that comes on Indian tv, so I doubt that Krrish 3 would be copying from there. Krrish coming to save Priya, is similar to Krrish coming to the rescue of Priya in the prequel. So there is continuity of themes.
15. Originally I thought this was taken from MoS as well, but this is debatable given the shooting of Krrish had ended before MoS released. So this means the sequences could have been done in postproduction, but given that the VFX were edited on location it hard to tell. In any case MoS was much more higher grade and spectacular that the fight scenes in Krrish 3(but I must confess I did fall asleep in Mos, so I must have missed a lot of action scenes)
16. This is funny, there are many movies where characters cannot find jobs or are unemployed, are they all copies of Spiderman?
17. Again a very generic theme to have a love interest of the superhero(Spiderman, Superman) In Krrish the love interest is actually married to Krrish, Krrish's advisor is his own father, and they are now joined by a child - again uniquely Indian movie moments. (Family values, Indian family traditions)
18. I have not seen the Dark Knight rises yet, I should, because the first one was fantastic. The Krrish statue scene was corny and it used as a pretext for that awful song God, Allah, Bhagwan.

reply

1. i will get back to u with that point i m still searching, If i dont then i owe u an apology.
2. It was not inspired it was COPIED, Only difference is Spidey jumps to shoot web and here he jumps to land (actually i was kinda amazed that Krrish's Power has such Boost Morale Boost, I mean in Krrish he uses force of water to climb that fountain's top which was i think 5-6 floors and here he just leaps and he can just jump over the building... weird no?)
3. Corrrection Yeah Spidey Swings, when he releases his web, in the reflection of the mirrors of the building u can see that exact pose.
7. Have You seen Matrix Reloaded?? If u did then exact pose Neo makes just before flying that exact pose is copied by Krrish, And yes i said It was a PASS so dont worry, I liked that shot.
8. Well I dont think it was that unique krrish has saved life in prequel in Circus. But, Thats not my point. My point is the exact way which building was falling, in the same exact way building was falling in Transformers 3, And this was looking so outdated if i compare with that scene(I know their budget is high, but i m marking my point).
9. now I have to tell u which mutant is Sabretooth? coz u have mentioned him in ur 13th point.. then too Victor Creed a.k.a Sabretooth.
9. Which mutant character was Saber tooth?
The "Cheetah lady" moves around in a whirlwind and Krrish captures her, you are relating this to when Sabertooth captures a character that teleports, we can already see a big difference in the characters. So is the Cheetha lady an original mutant character?

10. Kangna did a great job so, I think its all fair that we appreciate her performance.. but it was a reference isnt it?? BTW she scored an A+.
11. I didnt said anything related to fight sequence *cough* *cough*. He was just copied from X-men.
12. His acting was good but at the end his voice just became something else o.O anyways he was average.
13. Okay let me clear this, The scene where he teleports here and there and punches him then Sabretooth a.k.a Victor Creed catches his ribs, I know that was ribs and here it is neck, but it was similar scene.
14. WHAT!! You didnt watched Shaktimaan LOL! Seriously, I dont know what to say, well rescuing priya in prequel?? can u mention where he comes revolving around to save Priya in Krrish??
15. Who knows .. it was supposed to be a fight, then VFX team sees MOS "hey look MOS came we can make our fight even more better with this fight by copying this reference" And I cannot agree with How they can copy Krrish's shooting was finished May. I think they got 2 months from trailer which was more than sufficient time. About your sleep reference Well it was made for Die Hard Superman fans, I mean we had enuff superman movie with superman not throwing a Single Punch.. I would say not that great but VFX were jaw-dropping at that time. But Then I saw Gravity, then meh MOS became 2nd best VFX movie for me.
16. I have not seen a Superhero couldnt get a job- :P
17. See I didnt referred Rohit Mehra to Alfred but Priya a Reporter bcoz yeah they have taken from that Newspaper Reporter and AAj TAK reporter.
18. This is funny, So you have seen Krrish, Krrish 3 and not the Best Superhero franchise in the History. See it bro, Watch all 3 parts, You will forget about Krrish.
See, I have given a review about this movie ratted 6/10
I enjoyed the movie too, But comparing the VFX with likes of MOS and TASM... i dont think its inappropriate.
AND BTW I DONT HAVE PIRATED COPY OF KRRISH... I HAVE 700 movies collection and from 2004 I am collecting it , So guess i see every movie so closely that i live within that!

reply

Yes there are indeed many references to several Hollywood superhero films, but that is OK, as long as it is only references and not plagiarism. Techniques are made to be used again. The bullet time effect was so cool in Matrix, that ever since it has been used by filmmakers all over the world. Wire-fu in Hong Kong cinema is now become a staple of the action genre. Live Characters(or virtual characters) flying through virtual worlds and destruction of cities is also catching on and become a standard in sci fi cinema.

No, I do not think Krrish 3's VFX are as good as MOS. I have already said MOS is several times more better. I have said that Krrish 3 has narrowed the gap to less than 5 years in technology. It is using the same technologies that Hollywood has been using since 2010, like 4DMAX. However, Hollywood is still very much the king when it comes to the use of VFX. Even the first X men movies which were made using lesser tech than Krrish 3, integrate VFX better into the screenplay than Krrish 3 does and they use SFX(pyrotechnics, physical effects) far better and with more maturity. Bollywood still has a way to go, but at least the gap is not as wide as it was prior to Krrish 3. No other film industry in the world has gotten this close to Hollywood standards.

You can mark my words it is not long before you will see movies like Avatar, LOTR, Gravity, Avengers made in India. Until then, look on films like Krrish 3 as precursors.

reply

You have only started the thread with the "Krrish 3 has same vfx as compared to latest hollywood blockbuster and even sometimes in the movie it was better"
And Dude they need to make 2001:Space Oddessey or Bladerunner type of movie then we can compete with hollywood. Not with Avatar and Gravity -_-

WHAT WERE U EXPECTING HERE :P ?

reply

Well as not even recent Hollywood films live up to 2001 and Bladerunner, that is a tall order. You are going to have to wait until you see something like 2001 and Bladerunner made in India, Indian sci-fi is still in its infancy. However, due to films like RA-ONE and Krrish it is starting to take off.

I think I was exaggerating that Krrish 3 has latest VFX comparable to Hollywood. It does indeed use the latest technology, but it certainly not the same standard in quality. My most recent statements is that it narrows the gap between Hollywood and Bollywood by less than 5 years.

You cannot expect Hollywood type resolution of CGI and VFX in just 10% of the budget. Hollywood movies from 2005 look better than Krrish 3, not because they use better technology, but they can afford higher resolution(photorealism). In terms of technology Krrish 3 is using the same technology Hollywood has been using since 2010.

reply

Recent Hollywood movies havent lived up to 2001: SE or Bladerunner coz it is already made in hollywood. We want a bollywood, 2001: SE or Bladerunner type of movie. I dont mean the same movies but something which can absoulutely change the view of directors and producers of India that Sci-fi genre has no hearts and emotions in the movie. That fear should go that it doesnt have that emotions and all.. so, i could be in big fat loss. 2001: SE and Bladerunner wasnt just a sci-fi movie but both of these movie had heart, emotions, feelings, acting, spectacular, but it had nothing to do with vfx it was storyline, uniqueness. Simply something extra ordinary! And to boost the Indian Cinema's Confidence we need that type of movie to be made. See even with cheapest vfx salman can collect 200 crores. But thats not a point. We need an Evolution that should change the mindset of Indian Cinema.

reply

Sure, I would also like to see a classic sci fi like 2001 and Bladerunner. So out of all the directors in India who has the experience to mount such a film? The only directors who've tried sci fi are Rakesh Roshan, Anubhava sinah, and they are not certainly no Kubrick or Ridely Scot. The only director I can think that could make a serious and classy film is Bhansali and Anurag Kashyap. Possibly, Sujoy Ghosh as well, but none of them have any experience with Sci fi.

By the way do you know of any upcoming sci fi's or fantasy films in Bollywood or Indian cinema in general?

reply

Not bhansali his style wont suit sci-fi. As if I know Mr. Kashyap could suit, Yeah Sujoy Ghosh's style would be ideal also, i would like to add Neeraj pandey's name too. Ridley Scott also didnt have any experience when he was making Alien. So, I think its all about creativity.
Yeah there are few sci-fi movies which are coming infact a superhero movie "Doga" which i heard, it will be releasing in 2014 or 2015, also there was rumor of "price vaali" which had very huge budget of 140 crores, Dont know release date of that. well thats all i know.

[deleted]

Yes they are, at the very least 2010 Hollywood standards. I have no ulterior motive or any bias for the Roshans or a Hrithik fan boy. In fact I was very harsh in my review of the trailer on the Roshans. I am being objective here.

The Roshans and Red chillies have put all their soul into this project, it is evident from every frame in the movie. They are also working with a budget which is only 2% of a Hollywood film(although economically speaking they only require a budget of 200-250 crores to achieve the same, due to lower production costs) Although the resolution of the graphics is professional grade, the resolution could have been even closer to photorealistic, but that would have doubled the costs of the production considering they had to create an entire CGI cityscape. They mask the lower resolution by adding a blur. Hollywood can of course afford photorealistic resolution.

Another thing is Red chillies is a relatively new company and its technicians do not have as much experience and infrastructure as Hollywood's giants ILM, WETA etc. As the company expands, acquires more infrastructure and the technicians get more and more experience, their quality of work will get better and better. At this moment I think Red Chillies is probably the best VFX studio in India with the best infrastructure and technology. It is followed by, by a long margin, Mukata VFX(Eega, Magadheera)

Indian people need to realize that creating CGI and VFX is not easy. Sure, they would like to see 100% matching quality to the latest Hollywood film(current best Gravity) but that can only be achieved in either of two ways

1. Through homegrown VFX studios, which is still in a developing stage and will require several years before it can compete with ILM and Weta etc
2. By outsourching to Hollywood VFX studios, which is extremely expensive and time consuming, just the few seconds eye shot in Superman Returns cost $1-5 million. It takes about 4-6 months, believe it or not to complete such a shot.

Most filmmakers who do not have Hollywood budgets have to settle for lesser quality CGI, in the same way one who cannot afford 24kt gold, settles for 22, 20, 18 or 9. Even Hollywood producers will not spend equally the same amount of money for every CGI shot in the movie.

Considering the costs, logistics and difficulties, Rakesh Roshan has really done an admirable job. I hope in Krrish 4 he spends at least 100+ crore on just the VFX alone(The VFX budget in a VFX movie should account for 70-80% of the budget) This is when we will be reaching the latest Hollywood standards.

reply

well said friend...

I hope movies here start making 200+ crores, so they can spent like 150-180 crores and make it look like avengers and iron man etc.
also red chillies hires newbies during a rush production and then fires them once the project is over, WETA and ILM have also been known to do the same, but red chillies pool of talent is VERY VERY low... being a film maker myself, I know the morons who work at these fx houses on a temp basis

point being, better vfx doesnt need money, it needs planning and eye for detail and lighting... WETA had a very low budget for LOTR compared to the hobbit, they still managed to make the best fantasy film ever done...

we need more vision in indian cinema...

OMG, Seriously, terminator 2 had more better Special Effect than Krrish 3, Just watch Gravity if u think krrish 3 can compare with Hollywood, and yeah Kaal's Costume was so funny, It made up of Scraps LOOOOL, Seriously guys u people making me laugh, You say Screenplay of Man Of Steel was Boring, Seriously i laugh on that more u people comment. I mean i have seen X1's toad had better than this frog-man also Watch X3 for magneto's power, and Kaal's power was Just a Joke. Seriously, You Guys are so funny.

It would be helpful in debates like this to have some kind of objective facts we can compare the VFX, like for example technical specs like the resolution of graphics used in Terminator 2, Fifth element, the software used etc, in absence of that we have to rely purely on aesthetic judgement. In that regard I completely disagree with you that VFX of Terminator 2 and Fifth element were better, terminator 2 and fifth element are low tech, about 10-15 years behind current work. I can understand why you don't appreciate exaggerations that Krrish 3 is as good as Man of Steel in VFX, but you shouldn't do the same by exaggerating the other way that Krrish is worse than Terminator 2 and Fifth element.

I tried to compare Krrish 3 to some of the X men movies. It is miles above the first X men movie. The effects work in the first X men looks quite low grade in comparison to 2010 standards, such as the lightening effects with Storm. Also there are considerably less VFX shots and sequences. Thus we can at least say Krrish 3 is better than 2000 standards.

We need the input of an expert in VFX to be honest to make a more scientific comparison.

Kaal costume has got quite a bit of flack. I personally think his costume made sense - he put together the costume within seconds from scraps of metals he pulled using his telekinetic powers from his lab - it would have been unrealistic then to show a smooth iron-man-ish metal suit. The Roshans could have obviously have afforded creating such a metal suit, as they spent several lakhs on just Krrish's 3 mask alone. I personally think they did the right thing by keeping the rough metal scrap look and it was also within character of Kaal who is chaotic, evil and mentally deranged.

I was reading in one review by David Chute(Variety) that his costume looks like tin foil and that is clearly rubbish. It looked like scraps of metal - because it was made out of scraps of metal.

So, you are saying that costume which is heavily inspired by Rugby player uniform (even the helmet) xD is better than iron-man-ish metal suit. why he cant be in the coats, i mean look at black heart in Ghost Rider, if u see in comics he has demonic look but in movie its all different and most ppl did not complained. Seriously, The rugby suit is unrealistic, to avoid some punches from krrish u should dress up like Rugby player I dont think so..

wait a sec! u r saying that Krrish 3 has better VFX than X-men 1. Have u seen Toad catches a bird with its tongue or Magneto takes every policemen gun and shoots and bullet revolves around just a tip of their head, or Rouge first kiss to a boy? And u r saying that all these special effect were better in krrish 3, i mean frog-man catches butterfly is better effect than toad eating that Bird -_- .
As I said T2 has better effect than K3. Have u seen T1000 freezing in that Nitrogen Oxide then arnie saying and shooting "Hasta la Vista Baby". In 1992 that film was released.

That's really nice! I 100% agree with you! I wonder who edited the trailer of Krrish-3, it was nothing compared to the whole movie. The climax scene was best ever for an Indian movie, VFX were also much better than RA.One and Robot, some of the scenes were on par with Hollywood if not better in 10-20 time less budget than Hollywood blockbusters.
For all those who are comparing it with Man Of Steel, Krrish-3's shooting was wrapped up before June. More than 2-3 weeks before the release of Man Of Steel.

The songs in this film distracted a lot and made this movie unwatchable to me. Why must they do that?? And yes there are some inspiration from other Hollywood movies in Krrish but then again every industry inspires from something good and try to re-create it in it's own way. So comparing them is just like comparing Green Apple to Red Apple. Also i noticed that when Hrithik Swings by pole and land on Planes front wheel it plays BATTLEFIELD game theme lol but they modified some bars after it's start, you can hear it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vg0Tmydj29M

I was like WTF battlefield theme seriously? and it also played once again during Climax fights scene ROFL. It was ok movie but VFX was much much better than what South Indian films even RAone had. So saying RAone FX were better than Krrish 3 then you are color blind lol
