Though I liked Mister Rogers and Jim Henson as a kid, I liked "Looney Tunes" and "Popeye" even more. Many of the characters in those old cartoons were very obnoxious--that's what made them great! I think it's nice how "The Mr. Men Show" brought back a bit of the "obnoxious" slap-stick humor.
As for Jim Henson, there were a good amount of his muppets that were "obnoxious", as you put it. I find them being the funniest.
I suppose you'd like to see Porky Pig without Daffy Duck, or Jerry without Tom, or Stimpy without Ren, or Fred/Daphne/Velma without Shaggy and Scooby, or Wilma without Fred Flinstone, Olive Oyl without Popeye and Bluto, or Mickey Mouse without Donald Duck, or Bugs Bunny without Bugs Bunny (with just an empty background).
You see, what makes good comedy are characters with opposing ways of acting. For instance, on "The Mr. Men Show," Mr. Grumpy and Mr. Tickle, or Mr. Persnickety and Mr. Messy.
Anyway, to each his own. As for me I like obnoxious, slap-stick, over the top humor. Yet my favorite movie is "It's a Wonderful Life" with James Stewart and Donnie Reed; which is quite the opposite. A very endearing heartfelt film. Go figure? I suppose for me, it's all about balance.
