I lost my best friend after 14 years

Had to put him down in july. Been my best friend for over 14 years. For a week I was in chock, 4-5 days of just constant crying. I haven't seen this movie since 2009. Don't think even today i'll be capable of watching it. My friend was euthanized due to buildup of fluid (heart pump failure). Some of my closest human friends reaction were "why are you so upset, it was just an animal" to me that reaction just baffles me.

"he who was my companion through adventure and hardship is gone forever" perfect quote to sum up this movie and the bond between a man and an animal.

Thanks for reading, and I know anyone who shares a bond between an animal knows exactly what i'm talking about, thank you.

I am truly sorry for your loss. Sometimes people can say the dumbest things. I remembered many years ago we had to put our cat down because of renal failure. We had her 13 years. My coworker at the time saw that I was upset and said "Well you had her for 13 years!" basically insinuating that I should just get over it. I was too young and overcome with grief to respond. Another one actually made fun of me when I was upset my hamster died. Well....I guess that one is a little strange lol. Anyway, I know exactly what you mean and I pray you find peace someday.

What a nice reply you wrote there xaviergrad01-1. I'm glad you shared your experience and as you can see we've had similar responses from coworkers/friends. Seems like they either don't have animals themselfs or they don't care enough.

I hope that cat brought you hapiness and nice memories for the time you had her.

Have a good day!

Your co-worker saying "Well you had her for 13 years!" basically insinuating that I should just get over it. I don't think he meant it that way.
People always feel awkward when dealing with emotional responses I know I do and many times say the wrong thing.
I think what he meant was you had 13 happy and memorably years with your cat and although it was sad it was his/her time to go. 13 years is a long time for an animal. Be sad but also happy he/she spent it with you.

I am so sorry. We had to put down my beloved yellow Lab Babe on 12/26/12. She was 12 and was dying of bone cancer. She was a valiant dog, and I will never know a finer friend. People do understand your feelings about your companion. I watch Hachi now and then, though not often.

So sorry for your loss. One of my dogs is 13 and has arthritis, cancer survivor and cataracts in both eyes and can barely make it up the stairs. When her time comes, I will be a mess.
