hollywood's portrayal of typical Americans

There's a real Us vs Them mentality in Hollywood when it comes to portraying either suburban life or middle America. Suburban people are suicidal, fake (as in social pretenses), and bourgeoisie. Example: American Beauty or revolutionary road. Middle Americans are bigoted, ignorant simpletons who dont give a hoot about anything but football, beer, and tatas.

Satirical....humorous.... whatever pretense this politicized movie-making cult is hiding under, the few actual laughs it gets are soured by costner's interpretation of BUD as a legal retard. i'll admit and be honest, it sort of saddens me that so many people would find his antics hilarious because at best, they're amusing. i can just hear someone in a modesto audience chortling when Bud threw his lemonade girlie drink out cause he only drinks Beer, damn it. the stereotype is partially valid. so why complain about an honest portrayal? cause that's all we get. SIMPLE life in america just can't be portrayed without a look of boredom on a teenager's face who just wants to GET OUT OF THIS HELL and go to a big city where they have ---culture---- or the sound of a cow mooing with banjo music overlapped..

Hollywood thinks that I, an average broad in America (except i go to uc berkeley and have extraordinary stage presence), am an idiot. otherwise they wouldn't try to make me believe that Bud wasn't a racist. would have been a good movie if he had been. They wouldn't try to sell me the same simplicity that i'm supposed to be laughing at (greenleaf will save the planet and rePUBESlicans are bad and make nuclear/football similes. this is all further proof that Hollywood considers both its customers and characters to be silly, gentile invalids.

im not hating on this movie because it's liberal crap. im hating on hollywood for their patronizing assumptions of my own simplicity. they think they know what i want, what conclusions, scenes i yearn for. example: "i want to see some *beep* blow up" or "oh my god, they're going to kiss.....YES!!! why not me?" movie ends, plot summarized neatly...bada bing bada bang bada BOOM. Movies aren't nearly as bad as TV. Is entertainment media in America supposed to be an indicator of where i SHOULD be mentally? Im scared that i've received so much of my education from an institution that clearly believes i'm just another dumb cow in the herd. I wish i were rich so i could fund my own movies, with the kinds of dynamics and endings i wanted, not what "the people" wanted. cause i bet there'd be a lot of people who would like my ending better.

on a lighter note

i did like the kids vanishing at the playground scene.

He threw out his "girlie drink" because he didn't want to be a drunk and disappoint his daughter anymore. If you listen to the dialogue in the scene it's quite clear that his intention was to start being a better person, not to reject any alcohol that wasn't Bud Lite.

A lot of your points are valid (of course Hollywood dumbs it down and relies on stereotypes and explosions to make money), but I think this movie at least tried to acknowledge the intelligence of its audience (although it certainly had an agenda to push). Sometimes if you really want to see something and you try really hard to find it, you will, whether it was intended to be there or not.

I think your too busy being offended by the movie to see what it's really about.
Bud isn't a stupid character, he is simply lazy and uninterested.

I am interested in what exactly your amazing ending would be.

Sadly, the stereotypical portrayal of the "real American" hits close to home. Sure, it's exaggerated, but it's more accurate than we'd care to admit. Thanks to the electoral college, folks like Bud count for a substantial portion of the electorate.

There's no rule that says rural people have to be stupid (and I know some very intelligent ones) but there are a lot of Buds out there...too many for a so-called "developed" country.

Good post. Hollywood is interested in pimping liberal propaganda, instead of telling a story, far too often. It's one of the main reasons why most movies are pure sht now.
