Could've been SO much better . . .

Saw this at TIFF (and analyzed it independentally of the more wild aspects of the "Midnight Madness" experience itself). Todd Brown's Twitch.com review, which is linked from the "Critics Reviews" on the main page here, sums it up nicely. The visuals are top notch, but the rest of the film has HUGE flaws in dialogue, character motivation, details of setting (as he says, "where are the doctors?", among many other nagging questions), and the ending is irritatingly obscure. I look forward to whatever this guy directs next (if he gets another shot), but this isn't the most auspicious debut. In its second half, it's ultimately just another re-heated exercise in torture porn (a term I really don't like, but it's the most apt one) when it could've been so much more given a stronger script and more realistic character development.

And seriously, do Americans even play themselves anymore in the movies? You guys should really be starting to get tired of Europeans, Australians and Canadians playing all your heroes. :(

Well I thought it was great. Nice tension, good acting and cinematography with an "under siege" plot that reminded me of Assault on precinct 13. The ending could of been more original but other then that not much to complain about. I also really enjoyed how the inmates looks very authentic. Another top notch film in what turned out to be a great Midnight Madness lineup (when it came to the 4 films I saw anyway)

Well, I don't really care about the American Horror rant (until another nation creates something better than "return of the living dead"..the crown stays at home).

The movie had good acting, great location, great premise, but the story falls all over itself.

It was not Titicut Follies, that's for sure - that's a script!

Yeah the American argument is lame. Sure America pushes out alot of garbage, but if you sift through it you will find quite a few Independent gems.
What has France and other counties done? Put out a handful of really good horror flicks and suddenly they're the best at horror? Really? Because if you start looking into lesser French,Chinese,Japanese, etc know horror films they have way more flops then good movies, just like the US and anywhere else.
There is no real contest when it comes to who puts out the most good horror, you just have to sift through a sh*tload of bad movies to find the good ones.

Why don't you make one then? I guess you have it all figured out. Make a better movie and I will congratulate you.
