i dont understand why that italian guy killed his friend in the street and then cried about it. did i miss something?

It might've been explained in the book but I haven't read it. So what I got from the movie is that scene was just to show the passionate nature of Italians, their flaring tempers and all that, and how they're different to the English.

That's basically it in the book, too. The two Italian men get into an arguement and one shanks the other without thinking, and then cries over him. As you say, I think that it's just meant to contrast the passionate Italian nature with the repressed English.
