'they shoot pictures' is a fantastic website, and i wholly endorse its endorsements. but it can be a little tricky to navigate, as there are numerous lists compiled in different ways (and all good lists). in my experience, it seems that the short and sweet list that is held in highest regard is the bfi "sight and sound" top 10 list, revisited every ten years (coming again in 2012). they compile essentially four lists: one for the top 10 films and one for the top 10 directors, one voted on by scholars/critics and one voted by directors.
for a list at a glance, that's the one to go with.
for depth, get into 'they shoot pictures.'
and while it's generally looked on with bemusement in the "serious" film community, i do enjoy the afi top 100 list for what it's worth.
