Overall, a modest improvement

Twenty-three films were removed from the original list. Of the 23 deletions, I agree with the voters on 12, disagree on 8, and I am neutral/undecided on 3:

- 39. Doctor Zhivago (1965) -- I disagree. This historical/romantic epic suffers a bit by comparison with Lawrence of Arabia and the Bridge on the River Kwai, and may seem less relevant to voers since the collaps of the USSR. I still would expect it to be restored to the Top 100 next time.
- 44. The Birth of a Nation (1915) -- Agree. Always controversial; historic film, but undeniably racist. It's probably for the best that voters went with Griffith's other epic masterpiece, Intolerance, instead. Even so, Birth of a Nation may be back.
- 52. From Here to Eternity (1953) -- Agree. This is a good WWII romance with a lot of "Greatest Generation" appeal, but it's not surprising that it fell. I would be surprised to see it return.
- 53. Amadeus (1984) -- Neutral. A minor surprise that this fell off the list entirely. It's not in my personal top 100, but still I would expect it to return next time, maybe around #90.
- 54. All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) -- Disagree. Still a very powerful war film. This should still be on the list -- I like it better than, say, Sunrise.
- 57. The Third Man (1949) -- Disagree strongly. This is the best movie that fell off the list. I have no idea why, unless voters considered it more British than American. This would be substantially HIGHER than #57 on my list, and I do expect to see it back next time.
- 58. Fantasia (1940) -- Neutral. One-of-a-kind experimental mixture of classical music and Disney cartoon. I have no problem with this falling off the list.
- 59. Rebel Without a Cause (1955) -- Agree. James Dean would be 76 if he were alive today. In another 10 years, he would have been 86, and his influence will have waned that much more. This film will not be back to the Top 100.

There is probably not all that much difference in the vote totals of the films that place between 60th and 140th, so there is nothing intrinsically surprising with these films coming and going:

- 63. Stagecoach (1939) -- Disagree. This Good early Wayne vehicle (yes, pun intended) should still make the cut.
- 64. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) -- Agree. Good but not great Spielberg.
- 67. The Manchurian Candidate (1962) -- Disagree. This should be higher than #67.
- 68. An American in Paris (1951) -- Agree. Overshadowed by the much more enjoyable Singin' in the Rain.
- 73. Wuthering Heights (1939) -- Disagree. Very good of its kind, but it strikes most younger viewers as theatrical and overblown. It won't be back, and I'll miss it.
- 75. Dances With Wolves (1990) -- Neutral. It's hard to know how history will judge this earnest pro-Indian Western, once the decade-long Costner backlash ends.
- 82. Giant (1956) -- Agree. Was only in the top 100 because of Dean; again, it won't return.
- 84. Fargo (1996) -- Disagree. This very black comedy/crime caper could be back in another 10 years.
- 86. Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) -- Agree. Good but shows its age.
- 87. Frankenstein (1931) -- Agree. Historically important, but a period piece.
- 89. Patton (1970) -- Disagree. I actually think this one will be back.
- 90. The Jazz Singer (1927) -- Agree. Historical significance only.
- 91. My Fair Lady (1964) -- Agree. Great musical, but the film is a bit too reverent; it feels almost embalmed somehow.
- 92. A Place in the Sun (1951) -- Agree. Like From Here to Eternity, but less so. Monty Clift, like James Dean, will continue to lose cultural currency.
- 99. Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967) -- Agree. This one didn't belong in the top 100 in the first place.

-----

Four films released between 1997-2006 were added. While they all have their strengths, I am really enthusiastic about only one of these:

+ 50. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
+ 71. Saving Private Ryan (1998)
+ 83. Titanic (1997)

In various ways, these three represent the Ben-Hur of the present-day -- state-of-the-art, effects-driven, and dramatically somewhat hollow. I don't think any of them has a lot of upside potential on this list. I'd rather see Crouching Tiger, Brokeback Mountain or even Little Miss Sunshine.

+ 89. The Sixth Sense (1999) -- This is the only one of the four that I think will gain in stature as the years go on. Top 50 material.

-----

Nineteen films made between 1916-1995 were also added. I agree with the additions more often than not, which is all you can ask for:

+ 18. The General (1927) -- Agree. Eighty years after its release, this is Number 18 with a bullet, and it's STILL too low, in my opinion. I expect to see this hold its place in the top 25, and for Keaton's Sherlock Jr. to join it around #75 next time. If you don't yet know Buster Keaton, do yourself the favor.
+ 49. Intolerance (1916) -- Agree. As I said, this is a much more diplomatic way to represent Griffith's seminal achievements.
+ 59. Nashville (1975) -- Disagree. Not my favorite film by a long shot. (M*A*S*H is overrated, too.) There are better Altman films than these -- McCabe and Mrs. Miller, The Player, maybe even Gosford Park.
+ 61. Sullivan's Travels (1941) -- Agree. Great film. I'm very glad this made it this time.
+ 63. Cabaret (1972) -- Disagree. Good movie, but not in my own top 100.
+ 67. Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? (1966) -- Neutral. Not an enjoyable film, but an extremely accomplished one.
+ 72. The Shawshank Redemption (1994) -- Agree. This very well constructed prison drama still has a lot of upside potential left; I see it in the top 40 ten years from now.
+ 75. In The Heat Of The Night (1967) -- Agree. As the token Sidney Poitier choice, this is a major improvement on Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?
+ 77. All The President's Men (1976) -- Agree. Very good choice.
+ 81. Spartacus (1960) -- Agree. Another excellent choice; much better overall than the superficially similar Ben-Hur.
+ 82. Sunrise (1927) -- Neutral. Good enough choice, though not my favorite silent drama.
+ 85. A Night At The Opera (1935) -- Agree. Very good choice.
+ 87. 12 Angry Men (1957) -- Agree. Another excellent addition.
+ 90. Swing Time (1936) -- Neutral. This is the second-best Astaire/Rogers musical, with dance sequences that are as good as Top Hat, and a plot that is even sillier, if that's possible. It makes my personal top 100, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it go next time.
+ 91. Sophie's Choice (1982) -- Disagree. Very well acted by Streep and Kline, but a dubious addition to the top 100.
+ 95. The Last Picture Show (1971) -- Disagree. Good film, but I'm a bit surprised this made the top 100. I remember Bogdanovich's Paper Moon more fondly.
+ 96. Do The Right Thing (1989) -- Agree. Strong film; good addition.
+ 97. Blade Runner (1982) -- Neutral. Good of its kind, though I'd prefer to see Alien or Aliens enshrined instead.
+ 99. Toy Story (1995) -- Agree. A controversial selection, but time will ratify it. This will be recognized a century from now as being as revolutionary a step forward in animation as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This will be comfortably in the top 60 ten years from now.

-----

Additional films that I think should have been added:

Safety Last! (1923) or The Kid Brother (1927)
Sherlock, Jr. (1925)
His Girl Friday (1940)
The Shop Around the Corner (1940)
Notorious (1946)
Dog Day Afternoon (1975)
Brazil (1984)

-----

Besides the deletions and additions, I'll quickly run through the films that moved up or down significantly (by 15 places or more), with just my Yes/No verdict on each. Again, there are significantly more Yeses than Nos:

+ 4. Raging Bull (was #24, +20) No, #24 was plenty high.
+ 9. Vertigo (was #61, +52) Definitely yes.
+ 11. City Lights (was #76, +65) Not really. 76 was too low, but 11 is too high.
+ 12. The Searchers (was #96, +84) Yes.
- 33. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest(was # 20, -13) Yes, #20 was too high.
+ 34. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (was #49, +15) Yes.
- 36. The Bridge on the River Kwai (Was #13, -23) No; #13 was too high, but 36 is too low.
- 39. Dr. Strangelove (was #26, -13) No.
+ 40. The Sound of Music (was #55, +15) No; this doesn't belong in the top 100 at all.
- 42. Bonnie and Clyde (was #27, -15) Yes.
+ 45. Shane (was #69, +24) Yes.
+ 53. The Deer Hunter (was #79, +26) Yes.
- 55. North by Northwest (was #40, -15) Reluctant yes.
+ 57. Rocky (was #78, +21) No.
+ 58. The Gold Rush (was #74, +16) Yes. This is actually a better film than City Lights.
+ 60. Duck Soup (was #85, +25) Yes.
+ 62. American Graffiti (was #77, +15) Yes.
- 65. The African Queen (was #17, -48) No. 17 may have been too high, but this belongs closer to #30 than to #65.
+ 68. Unforgiven (was #98, +30) Yes.
- 70. A Clockwork Orange (was #46, -24) Yes.
- 73. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (was #50, -23) Yes.
- 93. The French Connection (was #70, -23) Yes.
- 100. Ben-Hur (was #72, -28) Yes.

Overall, there's (inevitably) plenty for people to disagree about, but this list is a modest but definite improvement over the one from ten years ago.

For what it`s worth, your post was interesting, and I agree on The Manchurian Candidate.
