Because people Hinglish.

History 101. The English occupied India for several centuries. So of course they learned the language, Thank God the British weren't able to wipe out the people's culture, language and religion - like they are famous for doing in other countries of occupation.

I don't understand why he kept saying fish, like "oh fish"
who says that? Not even native english speakers.

Oh and he kept saying "dude"..... shivers.

reply

He said "What the fish!" instead of "What the f-ck!". I thought it was quite funny. :)

reply

Well, duh. Everybody knows that the English used to occupy India. That still doesn't explain why some lines in Bollywood films are in English and some are not.

Unless English words or expressions were adopted as cognates, and you didn't say that in your condescending answer.

All hot girls, put your hands up and say "0M SHANTI 0M"

it's just there... the characters in BW flicks are typically this middle-upper class urban type... they are all going to be knowing English in real life and going in and out in real life... the characters are just a reflection of those they are representing in real life... is how people speak.

some words/expressions are just more usefull in other languages. Think of how many words English lacks. It's just like you might call your friend yaar what can you say in English that has this same connotation? a word that people actually use?

HEISENBERG WAS HERE.... (I think)

(yes it's a chemistry joke so sue me!)

here in india, the language scenario is very different from that of western countries. people use to speak hindi, as it is the mother tongue, but a lot of words and phrases are used in english. this is because indian education system uses dual language system of imparting education. this creates a habit of using both languages at the same time.

apart from that, indians and india's culture are quite absorbents of other cultures and specially the english culture ! names like arnold, sly, cruise, willis, statham, jolie, pitt are very much known as these actors are very popular. english movies are widely shown on tv and cinema. even the studios like 20th century fox, universal etc have started producing indian movies and their hollywood productions and released in english as well as all regional indian languages (that almost count more than 22 !!!)

i think i answered your question properly (and slighly more than what u asked)...

BTW its nice to hear that our movies are watched (and sometimes liked) in other countries...!!!
