'She was in a catatonic state...she was voluntary'
Sorry but no one in a catatonic state can check him or herself into anything. That was a huge script blunder that I just couldn't forgive...And while I'm griping I guess I might as well mention that although I think Sam Rockwell gave a great performance, Victor's character (book) was just darker than he conveyed. I think so many opportunities for the film were simply neglected. And I'm not sure why this was done but it seemed to me that Denny's character was given more depth or perhaps just 'wisdom'...there were wonderful moments of irony in the book depicted in the contrast of Victor's intensive self-analysis and angst and Denny's easing-going, sometimes oblivious demeanor (e.g seeing Ida at the hospital where all denny can do is focus on a puzzle and continue to call her "Mrs. Mancini though he's role-playing her son)
