Coupland cameo

Does anybody know or think that Douglas Coupland will make any cameos in the series as he does in the book???

reply

I hope not. That was where the book got incredibly self-indulgent and stupid.

reply

Oh I totally agree. I believe authors should never EVER put themselves in as a character... it's incredibly egotistical of them.

"Guess that makes me Hydrogen...Element Number 1."

Coupland makes a comment about the "AntiDoug" that appears in his books. Its a little non-sensical, but does have some basis in truth. Basically he says this:

Question: In JPod, you write yourself into the story, or at least a character called Douglas Coupland, who’s a writer. Is it a fair representation of you?

Answer from Coupland: Yes and no. The antiDoug is my response to Google and search engines and archives that never go away. In the future everybody will have their real selves and their shadow self that exists purely inside computers. Take this interview, for example. It’ll be archived and will follow me the rest of my life and beyond. Sometimes press people will say, “Gee, you do a lot of interviews,” but the truth is, I don’t …they just stack up and up and up.

Douglas Coupland would be a much better writer if he wrote insightfully about these things, rather he struggles to justify later on why he let a gimmick ruin his book.

i feel that the coupland cameo is pretty funny. i get what he is saying about the archives and the legacy that will be left and it makes the book more of a satire than a self-indulgent exploit. after reading jpod, hey nostradomus and now just starting generation x i think he has a clever way of looking at the world and his critique of the it is very different than what most would say or think. did he change his character in the book at all, or is it a pretty close representation to who he really is?

reply

He's supposed to be the Anti-Doug. I think cooupland sees him as more a character than his actual self.

Speaking of Cameos, was that Coupland posing as a dead body in Cowboys tuss dream. The body on the floor of the elevator.

One of the directors was interviewed on Urban Rush on Shaw.
Apparently Coupland is going to appear at some point.
