what's so great about this movie?

it was formulaic. not really groundbreaking in any way. the acting was so-so.

It worked as a dramatic thriller, about a key historical event. And the key roles were played by well-known veterans, such as John Goodman and Alan Arkin.

Agreed, felt like a TV movie. Very pedestrian direction, lack of any real suspense, uninteresting screenplay, lame comic relief. Affleck is such an intensely mediocre filmmaker.

Terrific blend of fact, fiction, archival footage, suspense and humour surrounding a pivotal historical event during the last century. The Iranian scenes were brilliantly recreated.🐭

Nothing really. A formulaic unoriginal film.

reply

Very poor film. Atrociously overrated.

reply

Just tried to watch it. Didn't make it past the first hour. By far my least favorite of Affleck's work.

reply

Nothing. It's quite bland, which is Affleck's specialty.

reply

It's full of suspense, well acted, based on historical events, entertaining and has a great crowd-pleasing ending.

It's full of suspense
MOST of which was fake nonsense that never happened.
well acted
You thought Affleck acted well?? Okay.....
based on historical events
Only very remotely. At least 85 percent of it was utter nonsense that never happened.
entertaining
Only in a mindless sort of way.
and has a great crowd-pleasing ending.
Everyone was supposed to wave their flags and cheer -- when if they had known anything about the real story, and had been THINKING at all, they would have rolled their eyes and groaned at all that silly nonsense at the end which isn't what happened at all.

As only ONE example: Instead of simply calling the control tower and having the flight denied permission to take off, the Iranian equivalent of the Three Stooges just jumps in their cars and tries to catch a 747 taking off, by chasing it down the runway? Reality check: A 747 taking off is going at least 150 m.p.h., and the jet blast behind it would have blown any vehicle behind it clear off the runway. But "YAY, now we can drink ourselves senseless again!" Not impressed at all.
