Anyone else think that Argo winning Best Picture was the Academy's way of apologizing for the snub?
No, I don't. I think the idiots in the AMPAS "awarded" this ridiculous pack of lies because it flattered them, pretending that the phoney movie story had been crucial in the "escape". The
truth of course was that the fake movie was completely irrelevant, and no Iranian official ever asked about the movie or cared about it. (And of course, there had been no "scouting of locations" in a bazaar, which Ken Taylor said would have been far too dangerous and he never would have allowed it.)
It was just a cynical ploy by Affleck to suck up to the Academy voters, by making them feel important and valuable -- and it worked. But it also blew the last thin shred of credibility the Oscars might have had left.
It was also typically ignorant (and arrogant) of Hollywood to think that a Canadian movie made by Canadians would have been controlled by Los Angeles, not Vancouver or Toronto. As if!
At the same time, even though the Academy members enjoyed having their egos stroked by this bogus movie, they were not going to pretend that Affleck had been the Best Director, when he hadn't been at all.
