Females do NOT do the Haka.

The dance they do at the end at the Lacross match is a culturally insensitive mocking of the New Zealand Maori Haka (war dance). It's a ritual that is NEVER performed by women. They'd have got away with it in this movie except they started with the tongue threat. Really poor directing (or whatever) to let that in :/

Well, I am not from the UK or New Zeeland, but I too went 'uuh?' about it.

Besides they doing it at an inappropriate time (it is suppose to be done at the beginning of a match as a greeting to the opponents and install fear into them, if I recall correctly), this is suppose to be a respectable boarding school. But all the teachers and parents seemed to think 'oooooh cute cheerleader dance.'

It was highly inappropriate. This was suppose to be the cream on the cake for the movie. Showing how she finally intergrated fully into the school, and that they all have become a team,... and as a team able to such feats as winning in sports,... but this totally screwed it up for me.

Especially seeing the camera positions the director choose at some points. Perhaps he thought, lets put in some quick flashes, to spice up the movie even more. Who knows, perhaps to acquire a more male teen audience?

I would have to look at the trailers for this movie,... if this bit from the movie, is also in the trailers, then I am sure this was the directors intention.
Get the male attention. Perhaps even attract the daddies who go to movies with their kids. Daddy after seeing trailer: 'oh, uniforms wearing girls and flashing, lets take my kids to that!'...
The director could not have put it in the trailer, if that bit of semi cheerleader Haka dancing was not in the movie.

It is all about ratings and advertising,... is my guess.

Anyway my general opnion of this movie was... entertaining, but there are approx a quazillion of these kinds of movies out there.

so 6/10 for me, for quality, but totally lacking originality.

There are several Hakas, including Hakas done by women. It may be culturally insensitive for English girls to perform a Haka, but if that is the case, it is because they are English, not because they are women.

reply

Nonsense. They don't own the dance and no particular regard needs to be granted to any ethnic group. Like it, don't like it, it is no concern of the director.
