Okay, really breifly, the girl who was interviewing him in the bleachers was his daughter Maria. She was buying the grandmother's house in the neighborhood.

This is what he explained to her. When Chick got in the car accident, for some time he was in limbo when his mother came to him. Among other moments of flashback, one night his father moved out. Chick didn't know why and blamed his mother for the failure of the marriage, and treated his mother disrespectfully from then on. At the very end of their day together, the mother takes Chick to a home in Collingwood where his father had a second store. Through the window Chick sees his father with another woman and then another young man just a little older than Chick comes into the room. Chick's mother then explains that the father had been married in Italy during the war and had another son. When the war was ending the father decided that he wanted to come back to the US and marry Chick's mother. They did get married and started their own family. At some point Chick's father brought his "Italian" family over and started a second life in Collingswood. When mom figured this out she confronted Chick's dad and he left. Chick asked his mother why she never explained what happened to him and why did she let him blame her all this time. She said she knew how much he adored his father and she didn't want to hurt him by telling him the truth. Yikes, thanks mom for letting Chick become a jerk and not letting him deal with reality. What a S-H-I-T-T-Y mother and story. Barf.

it is also explained that Chick tried his best to make it up to his daughter and that he died six years later.
