A question for the good observer

Dear IMDB Friends,

In this great movie, one of the characters, Salvo Lima, portrayed by Giorgio Colangeli
is found smoking something. It is (probably) not a cigaret or cigar, because of the absence of fumes.
I thought that it might be a menthol inhaler, but I might be totally wrong. Could one of you shine some light on this enigma (at least for me). It is an incredibly stylish prop, I'm even considering buying it if in know what it is. I hope to hear from you.
