is this funny? like... is it comedy?

Because, I didn't laugh once. I did one grimmice/snicker over a line delivery that I immediately forget, but that was it. I watched the premiere to the end waiting to laugh.

I know how to laugh by enjoying everything from Blazing Saddles, Airplane, Monty Pythons, the Dead Pools, what have you.

Sure, I get comedy can be subjective.... but is anyone laughing?

Also read it took a few episodes to spin up.... up to what? Yawner characters acting non-funny and more swearing?

Doubt I'll bother waisting time on another episode after this boring setup.
Is there an episode that is actually "Funny" I should try?

"It's the premiere... give it time..."

No.

It WAS the premiere. THAT is their ONE CHANCE to snag attention. That is what they are supposed to do. Not "build up" to something better eventually.

But it's usually not the case. Shows and characters get tweaked and find their groove after several episodes, that's pretty normal. Look at The Office, those characters are COMPLETELY different than they were at the beginning of the show, and that's arguably one of the best comedies ever.

reply

I appreciate that perspective, but they had their chance. I don't find "shows" entertaining anyway, but I gave it the one shot.

Shouldn't it have SOME laughs if it's comedy??

reply

I haven't actually watched it yet, because I think these shows need a few episodes to get fully developed, so I let a few get released before starting the series. You say they had their chance, but if you make a final verdict after one episode, the chance wasn't exactly fair, based solely on the history of television. The electricity you expect from a first episode is the exception, not the rule.

This is a weird show. But I actually don't get a lot of HBO's content. They by and large don't make programming for me. I'm sure this is somebody's type of humor but it ain't mine. I can't even tell if it's supposed to be a comedy or not. Is how weird it is. But i'll pretty much watch anything with Hugh Laurie in it so we'll see where it goes.

reply

By the LOOK of it, I thought it should appeal to me. The trailer was barely "ok", so I guessed they didn't want to give out all the jokes.

Oh well. Guess it was never made for me either.

reply

It looked liked they were channeling some Hitchhiker's Guide and The Starship Titanic. It looked brilliant. I'm sure that's what they want the show to be.

reply

Not great, annoying people are not funny. Will watch a couple more.

I saw the "funded by Canada" after the credits. But it's film in England and the creator is British.

reply

I'm going to give it several more episodes before I make a final judgement. I think it shows promise..maybe not as a rollicking LOL comedy but one more subtle.
We'll see.

But to be completely honest I usually hate regular tv comedies and very very seldom lol at any of them. I don't even expect that.

reply

It definitely was better toward the end. Maybe once we get away from establishing the premise the show will take off. Plenty of great sitcoms have sucked for entire seasons before getting funny.

reply

but like satan says "annoying people are not funny". is this a comedy? Or just actions of annoying people? I feel I read it wrong. Thought it should be funny.

IMDB lists it as comedy, sci-fi. The sci-fi part is easy to spot. ... the "comedy"... ?

reply

it's like your whole existence is to slag this show off

reply

stretching there a bit, don't you think?

read the IMDB reviews. a LOT of people don't think it's funny.

I gave it a few minutes of my time, that was enough. it may be the least funny "comedy" I've ever encountered.

reply

i don't know,
i see you replying in these threads like your life depended on it

reply

simply misreading on your part

reply

True. First season of Seinfeld was not great.

reply

what about this:

post up one of the jokes or humor situations in this show.
I know it won't play as well in a reading as it would live actors delivering it, but
lets just see what part is funny. serious about this.

reply

I'm giving it a few episodes. I didn't mind the pilot at all. I generally don't like most comedy so I am not surprised that I didn't laugh. There have been a few shows where I haven't really cared for the pilot and end up liking the show, especially when there is a large cast.

At least it's not another cop show or hospital drama.

reply

i'm not watching a ton of shows right now but this seems like a dud to me.

reply

I'd saddened the longest post here is mine. :( Oh well. I tried that last episode, same old same old, so I skimmed to the ending.... still feel nothing. Man. It's like everyone is just making stuff to fill all the streaming channels now --- cuz "people are dumb enough to watch anything, and we can sell them soap" :(

We need to go back to 3 channels, instead of 9000, to squeeze out the total crap, and just release the very top tier stuff. Shame that will never happen again.
