Ever been in a Fight?

I have, but only once, got the s h i t kicked out of me but both of us went down for a couple of days.

What's a fight? Is this some sort of physical confrontation?

You said "Ever been in a fight" is it possible to be out of a fight. I mean you must have got into it some how so you must be able to get out of it right?

You sound like a legit 40 yr old nerd living in his moms basement, commenting on sites about how lame other KIDS are, considering that's what you really are. I train to fight for a living and I can tell you that you sir, would get your ass kicked by any female member of my gym. As for the rest of the comments, they are naive and ignorant, but yours is proving that you probably got your ass kicked on the daily in highschool and now that you live on a computer and don't go outside, you think you can lie about your life experiences and future endeavors. Go eat a dick you dork.

reply

I've been in several, but the first time I did I realized it was nothing like the movies or on TV. There's no up and up cool looking stances with quick dodges, slick reversals, and intense hits, its just punch kick block and repeat. I won my first fight but I felt really stupid looking after because I was just swinging around.

Well I've been in some in-the-school-hallways-judo-push things, but no hitting n stuff. I've wondered many times how I would fight if it would come to that, I think I could make some damage to the other side. I'm working out a lilbit and I hit my boxing sack once in a while.

And kicking.. why not? :P

God these forums are full of stupid little pussies. Kicking why not, you ask?

I'll tell you why, because try to kick me and you will find out what happens! Try to kick anyone in a fight and see what happens. Real life isn't like movies kid!

Jesus Christ, you must be in grade school! This is too much I could be entertained all day reading what stupid kids like you have to say on subjects like this!

Kicking is gay, boywonder, you're right. I liked Jake's earlier fighting style better in the movie, honestly. Screw that UFC sh!t.

reply

Well I've been in one serious fight. I talked back and the dudes just ran after me and put me to a wall and started to hit me til I was down then I just ran hehe but I did hit back but not much. I just see it like an experience nothing else.

sounds more like an ass kicking to me.

Ive been in several fights, but usually lost because it was more than one person against me. I was in a one-on-one against a dude in In School Suspension (ironically i was there for a fight they said I had which didn't happen). I slipped on papers and got punched in the face. A *beep* way to go down.

The short one's gawking at me and the tall one's being very droll.

If you can take a beating, you can give one too.

Takes more of a man to take a few hits than to throw some out. God, I need to get my ass kicked.

I dont necessarily agree with kicking in real life fights but If you disagree with all the mixed martial arts nd agree with ajeks earleir fighting style.. u wud never win a fight against someone who was GUD at mixed martial arts nto jsut someoen that takes it nd claims there good at but if someoen is actually good at it they will probably kic kthe *beep* out of u bcuz if the fight goes to the ground your gonna SUCK nd if he get position on top hes gonna kick the *beep* out of you and your not gonna be able to rol lout of it cuz u dont know how... sure boxing is nci wne ur standing up but very often u c someone go for someoens leg someoens falls then you lose..

reply

Let me kick you one time, haha. Put your guard up even, then you can limp over and try to throw a punch on one leg, heh.

I don't know where you all are from but fighting is still a rite of passage here in sunny Florida, where we like our beers cold, our women nekkid, and our presidents appointed.

reply

The problem with kicking is not that it does not work. When you kick, you give up your stability. Most people have no idea about fighting and just charge you. If you have one leg up while being charged you are going down. And that is not the mat, that is the street. And concrete is hard.

We did some training regarding that very issue in my last school. One guy would try to kick while the other charged him full speed...always ended badly for the one kicking.

Kicks work if both people try to keep their distance and look for openings. In a street fight with somebody who might just charge, you are better of using your hands and keeping your feet down. That has nothing to do with the effectiveness of kicks and everything to do with takedown defense.

reply

First (only?) sensible comment in this increasingly disappointing thread.

People who don't like their beliefs being laughed at shouldn't have such funny beliefs

reply

I have been in several ever since I was 5 probably because I was born and brought up in Kuwait and as an Indian kid growing up in 80's Kuwait, I used to be beaten up by gangs of bedouin nomads. I hit puberty early and soon outgrew most of my peers and then coupled with the martial arts and later the hours in the gym, I guess I became the aggressor in fights and a successful one at that. And those who scoff at kicks, I know what you mean but trust me if you think kicks do not exist or are irrelevant in real fights, you are very wrong. Most commonly low range kicks like sweeps and very often the knee is used in real fights. I cannot count the times I have used soccer shin kicks and muay thai type knee strikes in fights. Nothing generates as much power and offensive damage as those. But I guess when a person fights in the streets it also depends on your upbringing and situation. I learned a long time ago to bring the bath-tub and the kitchen sink to a fight ;)

reply

That's really intersting, Ginu-tg-1.

I'd say if you kick has a lot to do with where you learned to fight growing up. I had my first fight around the time I was 8 in Kentucky in the 80s. There was a certain honor to a fight there, you fought fair, your buddy and the buddy of your opponent watched to make sure it was "fair" and you used only your fists. This was understood since grade school.

Then I moved to New York when I was 10 and kids at school didn't think my southern accent was very appealing and I found out how sleezy New York fighters are. They didn't kick but their friends would stop in and mess with you - they would hit when you weren't looking and once in physics class one guy even hit me while the teacher had my hands behind his back.

So you have to adapt.

I wish I had had some good fights as you describe but I rarely looked for fights and people give up quickly if you don't and I gave up twice myself - so I never gave myself the chance to see what I could really do or take, I regret that now.

What hump?

Nice post.

reply

Kicking is gay

Try telling that to a Muay Thai guy, he'd knock your head off.
Trust me, kicks are as much effective as punching and its not just in the movies.
But of course if you're a boxer and you're good at it, don't try to switch things up by kicking, you'll just get uncomfortable in the fight and lose.
Especially if you're an amateur fighter, don't kick because you'll just lose balance in your footing and get your ass kicked.

But if you've got shins of steel and is well-trained enough, go for it.

Pilot pt.1http://www.shorttext.com/e0qavu

reply

Please, I would destroy a Muay Thai guy with my punches alone.

I'm happiest...in the saddle.

reply

No you wouldn't, dude! obviously you have never fought a seasoned muay thai fighter, because if you had you would know that the knee strike can easily break the bones of your arms if you dont know how to block it and just put your arms in front of your face, and that the roundhouse can project an impact three times as powerfull as the hands ever could.
so *bleep* you, you *bleeping* *bleeper*!

reply

There is no point in trying to explain this to foolish individuals from this board. I wish i could hear someone talk down on a veteran Muay Thai Fighter. As whippin' all day right there. Lets be honest, they train to strike with more than just fist so hand to hand combat, they would win by experience and technique.

kind of like your bruins were destroyed the other night?i believe scott walker had a double knockout!

reply

been in scraps and buddies been in alot! and will agree never much kicking in any of the fights? cause you can get messed up if you miss (and they usually do) but know this hawian dude who knew all that karate (crap) and seen him take town some big dudes with his kicking, hit you in top of leg, takes alot out of you and if he kicks you in head? your threw, but he only one i knew who who kick real good? but i do agree most fights are punching and wrestling around, a hard punch on the button is all it takes!

reply

I'm pretty sure hockey players don't kick because they have blades on they're feet.

reply

Yeah but you can use it very well.Didn't you see how Ryan used it against Jake when he first fought him?He came at him with both fists to the face and the normal reaction on the opponent's part is to try and block it.And then while Ryan did that he nailed him with a kick to the leg.You can even use your knees too.Trust me I've been involved in martial arts since i was 7,and I asked the same thing, what good is kicking someone in a street fight, and they teach you specific ways to use it.And Ryan demonstrated it pretty well.

reply

Kicking does work in real life fights, but I would suggest only low, leg kicks to the untrained as high kicks are prone to knock you off balance.

Novas portas pandimus

reply

Exactly great point.I just stated that to the guy who said they don't work.but low kicks do,because those bones below the knee are weaker, and easier to damage.Just ask athletes.

reply

i agree with both sides of kicking or not it really depends on how hard and well u can kick, its just like if u cant jab dont throw ur lefty simple as that

reply

Oh do *beep* off. In a high street brawl you'll punch, kick, bite, butt, stamp, whatever it takes. Because the *beep* who has started on you *will* do the same to you. Better to be dishing it out than receiving it.

Hmm hang on, are you on about flashy kicks to the head and stuff? Yeah that would be dumb in a brawl

reply

Agreed, ViolentBob.

reply

what makes kicking gay? if someone train themselves to use their legs to knock you the *beep* out, how is that gay? if you tried to kick someone in the head, you'd probably fall over

i definitely prefer punching over kicking though but i box so obviously thats what im more comfortable doing

but in a fight id throw punches, kicks, knees, and elbows

There's no "glory" in fighting. And with your head flushed with adrenaline, there's no ideas like "no i can't kick, cause that'll make me look like a fool." And considering that your legs is far more powerful than your fists, it makes it quite natural to use them.

However. This is the most awkward post i've ever read. "Have you ever been in a fight?"

But of course this is IMDB and anyone who wants to be the toughest guy in the world can be.You probably type in "street fights" in youtube and try and learn how to fight.

I understand that you are a man who knows how to get things

reply

I was in Chicago not too long ago and some scumbag in an alley tried to mug me. Kicking is extremely useful. A guy with a knife comes at you and doesn't protect his legs well enough and it's not that hard to break his leg in half. All I had to do was a quick shuffle forward and one good solid fu cking strike to his lead knee. You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. If you know how to kick it is extremely useful. Shut the *beep* up, kid.

And, by the way, naming yourself boywonder and then trying to talk like you think you're hot sh i t really doesn't help your case. Dumbass.

reply

Yeah, my wife shattered a guy's kneecap when she was in high school. Her dad had showed her the move, she didn't think it would work, it took very little strength - she felt really bad.

I'd like to learn a move like that but now that I'm out of high school, I don't typically have a good reason to get into fights.

When I was in school kicking would have been considered a "girly" thing to do and you would have gotten a lot of crap for it after the fight even if you won, maybe especially if.

Not anymore.

Trust me when the person your are trying to fight in the street, takes a martial arts stand,it's like you're fighting two people, really, seriously. If you don't know any kind of martial arts and have no weapon(which might not help you out anyway,if they're that good),you don't know what is coming at you. They can fake you out with a punch and drop you with their feet faster than you can spit.Trust me I've seen it,it's not a pretty site. These people know where to hit,how to hit,and are trained for this style of fighting as well.Do you actually think if you get a few knees or even elbows really hard close up to your head, face,or jaw is going to keep you going? You're nuts if you think so.

reply

I've kicked plenty of times and it's never turned on me. Almost every fight I've ever won was because of a kick. A good kick to the body seriously winds the other guy. so in short if i kick you i'll see what happens from my feet and you'll see from your knees.

One day you will cross paths with a person thats gonna *beep* your world up by kicking you in the face piece.

reply

Lol, wow you don't know *beep* bro. What are you impervious to kicks now? Although head kicks are pretty risky in a fight unless they are on the floor or bent over...kicks are fine in a fight. Although, being an assistant Jiu-Jitsu instructor at Gracie Barra...I would rather take it to the ground, but that doesn't mean I would have a problem kicking or kneeing you.

One pussy not knowing how to really fight beating up some other pussy who doesn't know how to fight, doesn't make the first pussy any less of a pussy who doesn't really know how to fight.

Guys like you come into our gym everyday thinking they are tuff because the got in some school yard fights, some hallway brawls or some bar fights... lol..every one of you gets humbled when you come. You guys are so...

I have been in many fights. And yes, they are nothing like you see on video.

Unless you are a professional, and have been in training recently, that:

If the fight is fair (one on one and and you are evenly matched), kicking is very effective. However, win or loose (I have lost as many as I have won), you get tired very fast. It hurts your hands when you hit someone in the face. When the fight is finished (in about two minutes or so) you are so worn out you don't care who won, you start moving in slow motion early on. The person you have been fighting is in about the same shape as you. It doesn't matter who won.

Fighting doesn't prove anything. It doesn't change the fact that it is just plain stupid or who was right or wrong (unless you are being mugged).

The best way to win a fight is to not get in one. Running from a fight is much better than abusing yourself. I don't care if other people feel that that is being cowardly. It is being smart, not stupid.

I am writing this before I watching the video. I was checking to see where IMDB ranked this. My dander got up reading some of the posts and I had to reply. If I help one person in this, then I have contributed in a positive way.

Any one who has been professionally trained, or is a trainer will agree with me.

I remember one time in High School when I was in a fight, I got so worked up that I put the guy head first into a trash receptacle, and he was bigger than me. I was in the wrong by letting my mouth override my brain. It still didn't mean that I was right because I won. I did apologize to him later on that year, I felt so bad, every time he saw me he would avoid me. We turned out to become good friends, he respected me for apologizing, not for winning.

Now lets watch the video to be entertained. Not to say I can beat him, you, your mother, father, sister, brother, aunts, uncles and me with one punch.

B-Rad Gluckman: Don't be hatin'

you, sir, made me laugh. Congratulations.

reply

You're really, really dumb. Seriously. Why do people kick? Because it's Stronger than a punch. Like, way stronger. Ridiculously. If you've ever been in a fight with a REAL fighter, you'd know. When you get your ankle broken from a flat out low kick, you'd really know. I know I learned my lesson. I do both krav maga and karate, and both teach kicks. Kicks that really, really, REALLY hurt. Kicks that you can't argue against. And the best part? They also teach punches.

yea..ive been a few..we had staged ones in the locker room like 3 times...i won 2 by KO and the guy quit in the other one..and ive only lost on real life fight, but the kid had 6 inches on me....im not big and chiseled...but if you punch at the right time and in the right way,, then its hard to lose

btw...kicking is for UFC...not street fighting

reply

I've been in loads of street fights and their nothing like martial arts, most martial artists would have their asses handed to them in a street fight if all they relied on was their training.

a street fight is won by the most vicious fighter that does the most damage, theres no rules in a street fight, their messy and you can't tap out.

reply

kicks do work even in a real life but only if you have experience of it. usually the though the ´fights seem to go to the grabbling punching stupid looking thing in the streets but thats what it is on the streets. i have not been in many fights but i think its very stupid to say that kicks don't work. whoever says that, obviously don't know how to kick.

Jake: She says he's pretty.
Joey: Yeah, well, you make him ugly.

reply

You say professional Martial Artists's would lose in a kick fight huh?

Well, yes and no. Tell that to any of the Gracies. Or Bruce Lee (if he were alive) for that matter. Bruce Lee was challenged constantly by wannabe tough guys that wanted to make a name for themselves and thought Bruce Lee was just a movie star showboat that couldn't fight for real. They ended up taking a beating as he won every street fight he was ever in except the first one when he was 10 years old growing up in Hong Kong and had no martial arts training up until then and was beat down by some local Chinese triad gang. After that he vowed never to be beat again, which is when he took up training. His parents moved him to the states sometime in his late teens/early twenties because they feared for his life after he became such a badass that he started demolishing everyone he got into a fight with including getting revenge on some of the local triad members who were rumored to have taken out a contract on his life afterward.

The fake martial artists that practice watered down martial arts that represent 80% of the rip off martial arts schools you find in America, yes, that stuff is weak.

But REAL martial arts that employ grappling like jujitsu, hapkido, and aikido would wipe the floor on the street. Of course that's assuming it's a one on one fight, since all fights go to the ground.

Most martial arts taught in studios across America are watered down with all the deadlies moves taken out. For instance, Tae Kwon Doe is watered down Hap Ki Do. The watered down stuff also doesn't teach essential grappling, which is absolutely key to winning a street fight. They only teach you how to win fights in a tournament, which is NOT by any means any way to fight for real.

The most affective kick is a straight kick. Roundhouse kicks are the absolute weakest and should not be used in any circumstances on the street. It's all for show and tournaments and stuff. And for all of you that claim that muy thai kickboxing would clean up in a real street fight, look no further than the first UFC where the thai kickboxer, who looked very impressive with his flashy kicks advancing in the rounds, was absolutely annihilated by the European jujitsu champion. As soon as the kick boxer attempted one of his trademark high kicks, he was quickly taken down by the jujitsu champ, but in a grapple hold and knocked out of the tournament.

Professional Martial Artists like the Gracies would wipe the floor in a street fight. They're born and bred from day one to fight, and fight to the death if necessary. Case closed.

regarding all the kicking discussions in this forum:
of course, if I'd try to kick someone he could easily grab me foot and bring me down, but I wouldn't dare to underestimate the kicks of the people I saw when I had karate-introduction. they'd make chop suey out of my rips and guts :)

reply

The only thing I know are fights in high school where people have watched a lot of TV but never been in a fight.

Most people are completely pathetic and you could win a fight. Most people are terrified even at the thought of being in a fight.

I have friends who for whatever reason, people didn't mess with so they were big but have never been in a fight. And they see that as a disadvantage now that they're adults, they tend to get afraid easily when things heat up.

Me, I moved to New York from Kentucky when I was 10, I had to fight, it wasn't really an choice. If I didn't want to live my life getting beat up I had to do something and I wasn't a complete pushover so I fought back and as soon as I did, I found that most people turned tail. Also, at least in the part of NY I was in, people were wanna-be's. People who live in certain parts of NY live in the shadow of the legends of the city, so fighting was common but pathetic.

You would probably do better than you think. Ask your average person on the street if they've been in a fight, most will say no or, "Yeah, back in 2nd grade - when Jimmy Johnson stole my oreo."

I've had quite a few fights where I just did what seemed pretty natural, protect your face and jab when you see a good shot - but back in the 80s and 90s no kids did anything but aim at the face - it was easier than now - but kids are wimpier now in other ways - so it's a crap shoot.

I have taught High School and I don't see much evidence that kids have gotten any tougher, even though fighting is probably even more a part of mainstream culture than it was when I was a kid.

I love the people who go on about kicking being a load of crap, MMA being bull etc. This is what happens when a hardened street fighter tries it with even an amateur MMA fighter:

Streetfights though are easy to figure out. The people who start them are angry and swing aimlessly. Naturally most people are right handed, and will normally either throw a right hook or a right cross, to the face. When this happens lean backwards and glance the blow then come through with your right hand to the body, following up with head shots and knees to the stomach/legs for dead legs.

NEVER go for the head unless countering/got the other guy on the back foot. If anybody knows **** about fighting they'll cover their face. If you are bigger/stronger than them always grapple. The fact is, if you are that much stronger than someone, they can throw fancy pants moves around but you'll always beat them.

As for kicks, they are a long range move. Only ever kick legs unless you have an exceptional kick.

That video is of a fair one on one fight though, of coarse it's skewed towards a trained fighter. That's nothing like a real street fight, where *beep* really stays one on one, or with someone getting a bottle or something.
MMA and that *beep* is good no doubt. But I'd never grapple or wrestle with someone fighting in the street. As soon as you're one the ground, someone else (like the guys friend) would just stomp your head.
You just want to stay planted and upright in street fights, that's why boxing is the most practical. At least then you have a chance of seeing or doing something when some other douche-bag gets involved.
And people who talk about fair fights, when you're in an actual serious fight, where if you get knocked down, you'll get your face kicked, and head stomped, until you're not moving, anything goes in my book. But that kind of thing is different, to throwing a few punches with drunk guy at the bar you're having an argument with. In my experience you can usually read the situation as too how serious it's gunna be.

My final word is though, fighting is pointless. Most guys are fighting because their trying to impress people, and it doesn't do that at all. If someone's being an idiot, just be cool, it's easier saying, calm down, have a beer with me, than getting into a fight.

Fighting someone that is drunk if u are sober is always an advantage. And if u connect with them, they will go down a lot quicker, than if they were sober.Their blood level is so low,and they don't really think straight, and can't concentrate.Trying to concentrate on something really hard next time you're half in the bag.

I agree with you, Bohemianism.

Fighting is pointless and a street fight (which I've never been in, really) is not like Hollywood - people don't fight fair and the friend or girlfriend even always steps in to mess you up. Almost never worth getting into - how often is something important really at stake?

I teach my sons to not be terrified in case of a fight but I don't teach them to fight. So they do a little training but that's more for their attitude not to really fight.

Got something against a woman's self defense class? Lol.

I'll say this. There are about five hundred different types of fights, just on the street, because each person brings his or her own element and level of unpredictability to it.. People all have their different preferences or styles, and when everything on the line, they'll go with what works for them.

Respect everything, but play your own game.

A fight in an uncontrolled circumstance with someone intent on doing damage is frightening. You do what you have to to walk out of it. Period.

Yes Misayharas is right. When you are fearing that you are about to get in to a fight just walk away. But if you HAVE TO fight, I would go with randomobserver's advice or start training on my self-defense.
