A question about David's father

Was he sexually abusing him? I'm curious because of the song and what he said to him in the holiday club/bar was a bit odd.

Baby, you make me wish i had three hands.

reply

Possibly yes as it was a bit odd what the father said before he began singing. Not sure if this is relevant but at one point when David went to get on the motorbike he tried to get on the front and the guy(Steve?) made him get on the back and said "I wonder about you sometimes". Maybe a hint that people thought David was gay? Probably not really relevant to the possible abuse thing though but just thought I would throw it out there.

I thought his dad was a total weirdo singing that song to him, just weird.
You don't really see his parents which is interesting.

reply

Was very odd indeed. Made me cringe, but in the end there was no real hint at anything worse, unless you count the obvious disinterest in his son's whereabouts and well-being as worse.

The point of the film is that no one takes David seriously. His dad still treats him like he's a kid (hence the embarrassing song), Emily doesn't see him in a sexual way and even when Emily's dad catches him and Emily's mother on the floor of the shop he doesn't think they are up to anything.

reply

I thought it was interesting that his parents were never really around. Certainly not around enough to wonder where he is when he was off seeing Emily (like at night for example, but the dad did say he worked nights so there's that).

His dad said his mum had died and i hardly think that if he was abusing him he would announce it on stage.......he got on the front of the bike with Steve because when Steve gives him and the girl a lift David gets on the front and the girl got on the back so he was doing what he normally did

I think some people read too much into things :)
