Was all this movie set in.....? (spoiler)

Was this whole movie set in California? At the beginning, you see that the hero and his girlfriend obviously reside in San Francisco, then they and their friends drive to the uncle's ranch. I thought I heard "California" mentioned again. Are there really inbred rednecks like the ones in this movie in California?
