Half the audience walked out in disgust

I don't know if it was from the breastfeeding shots or the "lack of parenting" that was in the movie but those people are fools. I understand it was marketed as a cute baby movie and not a documentary but still do some homework people.

Most of the people who left had kids, so maybe the kids were bored or the parents didn't approve of what was on the screen. I think it show the amount of ignorance people in America have towards other societies.

Anybody else have people who walked out? I know I live in the capital of shelterville Utah but seriously...

If they were bored of the film how does this show ignorance? This simply shows they weren't enjoying a movie. My God people take things way out of context. Your taste in movies doesn't define whether or not you are ignorant to a certain race, or your qualities in general. I live in the states as well and the whole theater was thoroughly entertained from beginning to end. And if parents didn't approve of what's on screen...so what? Thats their call. I could see why they would feel uncomfortable having to sit and watch a pair of naked breast with perhaps their 7 year old kid. I understand that it was part of their culture to dress like that in the film but still, it doesn't mean a mother has to sit their and watch it with their kid. That is totally up to them.

Walking out 10 minutes into the movie saying "this is disgusting" was a pretty big sign they were disgusted. My point was people don't do their homework and these people had no idea what they were going to watch, hence the ignorance.

Wow, that's crazy! That didn't happen where I live (in Boston suburbs). There was nothing disgusting about the movie whatsoever. There are some shots of boobs, but they're not shown in a sexual way at all.

I never said they "weren't disgusted". Regardless if they did research I'm assuming they weren't ignorant to the PG rating the film had.

I just got out of this and no one walked out of the theater; overall, I think they enjoyed it; I admit, I almost walked out, not because I was disgusted, but after 45 minutes to an hour of the same thing, it got a little boring for me. I did enjoy it, but for me, I would have liked something MORE than what we were given; and by more I mean narration, interviews, etc. Suffice it to say, it is a very organic documentary.

Yeah, I think Western society (or at least much of the US) is so used to seeing breasts as a sexual object rather than a natural part of the body and if they were solely focused on that then the purpose of the movie totally gets lost. I feel bad for people like that. Sure I can see how it would be uncomfortable to watch breastfeeding on screen with their own child, but a quick look on the internet would have shown them that breastfeeding was in the film.

I really think that we euro-trash have a healthier relationship to breasts, and singularly to their feeding function, than North-Americans. Example one: the national scandal sparked by Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" at the Super Bowl. In my eurotrashy country, no one would have bat a lid (cf the similar incident with Sophie Marceau at Cannes). Example 2: where else in the world than in the US would a picture of a breastfeeding infant, on the cover of a parenting magazine dealing with breastfeeding, be considered inappropriate (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14065706/)? That's sick!

Euro trash :)

Since I moved to the US from Europe, I have to ask a question: why do so many women torture themselves with these horrible fake boob implants?

Fake boobs look horrible, nothing says more "I am a slut, treat me like one" than fake boobs.

I can't understand this.

Plus they feel horrible. I slept with a couple of such-enhanced ladies and these boobs felt horrible, absolutely unnatural and these ladies could not feel through them.

Now I do have to agree, Americans do not have a healthy approach to boobs in general.

And no, you do not see a lot of women breastfeeding, at least not in my State. Note I live in a Red State.

But you do hear from time to time of a woman getting evicted from a restaurant because some old geezers were disgusted of it, and the chain had to do damage control and apologize publicly to the mother.

This would not happen in Europe, seriously, there would not only be a public outcry but a big gigantic giggle of disbelief.

Some women torture themselves with fake boobs because they are insecure. What does that have to do with America? are there no fake boobs in Europe?

I see plenty of women breast feeding where I live, I'm from Minnesota.

Sure some people have very screwed up views on breasts but seriously... not all of us do. Not everyone in Europe is oh so comfortable with nudity either.

You say that won't happen in Europe, how is it you know that? I'm sure there are Europeans that are putt off by breast feeding.

You don't know every European and their views on the human body. I like how you say that it would never happen in Europe but only in America oh please that is a bunch of bull.

You people on here sure do have some screwed up views on Americans, you all generalize us. Just because you see certain stories, read certain stories, everything you see on TV and a few people around you do not represent every person in America. Simple as that. Are you all really that small minded when it comes to Americans? America is not perfect but neither is Europe, Asian, Africa etc.

-- Very very few. It's unrare in the US, not common, but very very rare in Europe. We like boobs to be natural and responsive.

You say that won't happen in Europe, how is it you know that? I'm sure there are Europeans that are putt off by breast feeding.

-- Very very few. Women breatfeeding in full view is normal. Of course some men like to lurk, because a nice big boob is always nice to look at but you're not supposed to. It's like someone sneezing. You notice and you move on.

You don't know every European and their views on the human body. I like how you say that it would never happen in Europe but only in America oh please that is a bunch of bull.

-- I have not seen ONE SINGLE NUDE STATUE in the US. I remember a documentary following American tourists in France. They were taken aback by all the nudity. One woman asked to be put on the first plane back, even if it cost her money, because she needed to save her soul.

Saw today at the mall: a lady nursing her baby from under a large top which allowed her to do it without showing anything.

This is a country which has big issues with nudity. I have never seen one single nude statue in the US.

In Europe, they're everywhere. Nobody giggles or gets offended because of the "peepee parts" or breasts.

And women nurse in public and nobody is offended.

I'm American and was raised by a mother who thought breastfeeding was disgusting. Thankfully her views did not influence my own views when I became a mother. I breastfed my first daughter for 3 years (never in public after she turned 1) and I am currently breastfeeding my second daughter who is 4 months old. I can tell you that I feel that I need to cover up around most people b/c people in our culture generally are not accepting of it. And I even get stares when I cover up!!! The fact that I breastfed my daughter past 1 year is totally tabu here in the states. If I were to go to Europe or almost anywhere else in the world I wouldn't be in the minority.

I breastfeed my youngest right in front of my 4 year old and I take my girls to La Leche League meetings and I let my 4 year old watch this movie and in so doing I hope that my daughters will grow up knowing that there is absolutely nothing disgusting about breastfeeding and that it's perfectly healthy.

BTW, I am not a hippie. Just a mommy who loves her children.

Didn't those rocket scientists observe the ratings notice "Maternal and cultural nudity throughout"?
It reminds me of the elderly woman who shouted "That's disgusting!" during the love scene in "Desert Hearts." She didn't budge until the closing credits, though...

reply

Everyone who was in the theatre with me seemed to enjoy it, though one group of people near me went "oh my!" at every scene that involved the babies interacting with animals. If someone had walked out in our theatre, I think it would've been because of that group of people constantly muttering, and not because of the movie.

Lunacy is everything I need

reply

Actually, this is a film I am glad we watched at home. I just cannot imagine not talking during various scenes. Having little ones in our lives prompted much narration. Yes, there were a few OMGs but also a lot of awwwww... I see no reason why an adult would walk out of the theatre. Didn't they ever see the covers of National Geographic? Joke, intended...

Sweet documentary...

I thought it was pretty disgusting, and the mothers' breasts had nothing to do with it.

reply

No one walked out of the movie when I watched it.
But then again, I live in Europe where people don't think a pair of breasts is evil.

reply

Oh boy, America bashing. No, Americans don't think breasts are evil. We might be a little more modest about breasts, but so what? Some African tribal people might think you have a prudish attitude toward breasts. Let's all of us just be glad we Western women aren't forced to wear burquas.

reply

i was kind of grossed out by the nudity... i think i turned it off when the mom squirted her breast milk on the kids face

reply

given that the majority of americans are brainwashed followers, i'm not surprised by the amount of those that walked about and the negative reactions to the movie in this thread. i can only laugh at the ignorance and thank god i and mine are not as idiotic.

reply

I'm with you. I just watched on Netflix with my 9 year old and we were both engrossed by the entire movie. Anyone disgusted or offended by this movie really needs to open their eyes to what the rest of the world is like. Not every country has a Starbucks on every corner.

reply

How condescending, pynkpanther. You thank god? If you believe in a god, it's because you were brainwashed to believe in him. So not only are you condescending, if you believe in God, you're also a hypocrite for calling others brainwashed.

reply

lol sure, "modest about breasts" when half a baby's head is covering them... if not, show everything but the nipple! lmao

It's mercy, compassion and forgiveness I lack. Not rationality...

I don't see why. All the babies, from different upbringings, grew into healthy normal toddlers. What's the difference?
