Have You ever Eaten at any of these Places?

Just wondering - I never have; I was in Minneapolis a short time ago and wanted to check out The Nook, but never made it downtown. I'd love to sample a few of these joints.

Love watching the show...

Virginia Diner. I lived out in Prince George when I was in high school in the 80s and it was right down the road. I went back there a few years ago and the food was still pretty good. He did a show with another place that's just off Cary Street in Richmond. I'm downtown a lot so my wife and I have talked about checking it out sometime.

Between two evils, I always pick the one I never tried before.

Ate at the diner off of I64 in Olive Hill, KY. Good burger, great homemade pie. Yes, the gas pumps are still there. Overall, good local joint; nothing earth shattering or award winning, just good simple food. I'll probably stop again next time I'm driving that way on 64.

Only complaint I had was that the entire place seemed to be smoky; no real separation between the smoking/no-smoking sections.

I haven't been to any of the places but I have recreated the horseshoe dish (with some research) and I can say it's one of my favorite dishes

How am I supposed to be creative with 100 pushed keys?

I went to Chicago a few months ago and went over to Hackneys. It was as good as it looked, got the inside out burger and the fried onion, OMG, I still think about that thing!

He's been to a few places in my hometown that I've been to a couple of times, so it was cool to see them on TV.

I've gone several times to the Burger Bar he went to in Roy, Utah since I live just a few minutes from it.

It's pretty much the greatest burger I've ever had.

reply

I've been to the BBQ King and The Penguin, both in Charlotte, NC.

BBQ King is so-so, but The Penguin is awesome. The burgers are delicious

reply

No, but I sure would like to. An episode I watched today had I place that really stood out to me. I think it was Darwell's or something like that. It had the (former wrestler) son as the chef and the wacky dad using the dousing rod to locate new customers. The shrimp creole and the shaved prime rib sandwich looked amazing.

So much TV, so little time!

been to the bbq king. good. mckoy's is the best bbq i've had in charlotte.

Iron Barley and Sweetie Pies;

Iron Barley was probably the fav of the two. The smell of smoked oak had a very unique scent and added to the ambiance of the cafe. Which was located in a rather rundown part of St.Louis [what part of st.louis isn't}...the food was excellent but the prices were kind of stiff...a tad too high for the neighborhood.

Sweetie Pies: well, the food there was forgettable and WAY OVER PRICED: I had a pork chop, green beans, macncheese[incredible!], corn bread [equally incredible] and a coke...for lunch, cost: $14 bucks...the pork chop was thin and tough and forgettable, mac and the corn bread were OUTSTANDING...but those two do not a meal make..won't go back.

Also, have been to that Greek restaurant in the desert on the way to Vegas...I had a gyro it was KILLER...

Look at that puss. He looks like Boris Karloff.

it's one of my favorite shows to watch. I tell my family and friends to try places he has went. My sister lives in Phoenix and she has been to a couple places he's been to and enjoyed them. My only knock is that the prices of these places are a tad too high. For instance, Sweetie Pies, the place here that serves 'soul food'..I got a pork chop, macncheese, corn bread, a veggie and soda...for lunch..was 14 bucks. That's way too high and my chop was dried out and leathery. The other place I went for dinner and it was a tad pricy but not rob a bank pricey. But, they delivered the goods...Iron Barley...great place! It's almost our duty to support momnpop places against the mighty chains.

Who knew? I ate at the place in the Loo last week, the Iron Barley, had the smoked prime rib...you cut cut it with your fork. Had the schnitzel and spaetzeles before...not bad but not great. Rundown neighborhood but the restaurant was first rate ...the smell pulls you in like Ulysses and the sirens. Great place.

I've been to Iron Barley and have mostly positive comments. The menu is simple, but it has enough variety that I'll come back and try more. I thought I received enough food for the money. My bill would have been under thirty dollars had I not ordered drinks. I went by myself, but I can assure that there are not many places like this in St. Louis. The cole slaw with coriander is an excellent side dish for the oak roasted chicken sandwhich I had.

Complaints

The way the chicken is cut there are some bones.

The apple barley pudding is a good idea, but probably needs some tweaking. Maybe not make it all barley. 3:1 bread to barley might work better with the apple flavor.

White Manna's in Hackensack. Delicious little sliders. Place is definitely a dive, though.

Tick Tock Diner is good. Just a typical diner though. Nothing extraordinary really.

Skylark Diner is really good. A fancy little diner that serves alcohol. A little pricey, but tasty.

On my husband and my last vacation (to Chicago) we planned our meals around places featured on The Food Network - especially Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.

We ate at Hackneys (the country's best hamburgers) and their onion loaf.

We tried to eat at a place on the way to Chicago that was an old fashioned drive in that made it's own root beer, but it was closed (a "For Sale" sign in the window). That was the only disappointment. Everything else we tried was good.

We ate at the place outside of Springfield that featured the lunch and breakfast "horseshoe" meals and the pancakes bigger than your head. This was the diner in the Quonset hut.

Great food, great service.

There were a few other places we've been able to visit - but I can't remember them right now.

I live in San Diego, CA so I've been to two the places he's showcased on the show.

Tioli's Crazy Burger (http://www.tioliscrazeeburger.com) is a pretty cool place. It's small, and it has some unusual meat choices (kangaroo, alligator, venison, ostrich, etc), and the fries are pretty good (most of the time). The only con about it is that their "special" burgers are a little more pricey than the average burger (but that's probably due to the price of the meat). I've had their alligator (actually pretty good, but small patty), ostrich (tastes like a regular burger), chinook salmon (good), and a sample of the venison burger (sweeter than beef).

Studio Diner (http://www.studiodiner.com) is great if you're looking for a diner that's open 24/7. I've been there about 2-3 times, and I think their food is all right. I haven't had their dessert, but I have had their milkshake, and it's pretty good. Loved the portebello burger, but didn't care for the lox & cream cheese omelett.

I was just checking his site, and I didn't realize he's been to two other stops here (El Indio in Little India, and Hodad's in Ocean Beach), so maybe I'll check those out sometime soon.

The Niko Niko's Greek place he went to in Houston, yeah, I go there whenever I'm in that part of town. He didn't sample or review their Chicken Philly, but it's unreal. So much cheese. And they make a fantastic burger too. The place gets ridiculously packed by 11am, but if you get there when they open it's not too bad.

And those little donuts things he tried? Yes, they really are that good, but super-messy.

reply

those honey donuts things looked good! checked out voula's & the 'hobo breakfast'. out of bounds good! one of the best breakfasts i've had in a long time.

Season's Greetings!

I was at Dixie Quicks in Omaha a couple of years before it was on the show. As I recall, I had the strawberry French toast.

Yeah, it was heavenly. I need to get back there, good place.

Service was good too.

In Phoenix, I ate at Chino Bandito and Roberto's.

Chino Bandito is the place where they have Mexican, Chinese and Jamaican food in one place and you can have a combo platter such as an Egg Fu Yung Burrito or a Jerk Chicken Quesadilla.

The place has a large cult following and Guy raved about it, but I thought the food was pretty average, on par with what you might find at a shopping mall food court. If you went to Panda Express and then to Taco Bell, and then mixed your food together, you could probably replicate the experience somewhat.

I did think it was interesting that the Chili Relleno was breaded in Japanese bread crumbs (Panko), rather than the more typical egg batter. It made it very crunchy, almost like KFC's Extra Crispy chicken.

I might be back sometime, but I won't be dragging the wife and kids there any time soon.

Roberto's is a typical taco stand. There are about a million of these type of restaurants in Arizona and California, mostly with names ending in -berto: Rolberto's, Aliberto's, Poliberto's, etc. But this one is inside of a gas station, so Guy has to make a big deal out of it.

I'll admit that somehow, being inside of a gas station made the place seem more sanitary, since you could watch the food being made, but when the smoke clears it's just a typical taco stand.

reply

I'm sorry, but you are so wrong about Chino Bandido. NOTHING at TB or Panda(that place is awful) is on par with CB. The jerk chicken fried rice is to die for; along with the Jade Red Chicken. It's pretty cool that they let you sample before buying. I'm from Cali and I every time I go to Phoenix, I go to Chino several times. Once on a trip across country, my hubby and I stopped on the way and going back. Give them another chance.
