Yes, melodrama. I'm not talking about Lumet's remote version of melodrama; I'm talking about the deplorable TV soap kind. The scenes where the actors were talking into the camera are laughably executed. It was a bad decision to make their relationship ambiguous until three quarters of the way through, with the emotional overacting crippling the final phase of the film.
