Tarkovsky did it BEFORE Kiarostami

I really love, admire and appreciate works done by Andrei Tarkovsky. When I was watching Certified Copy I was amazed how closely this movie reminded me films shot by Andrei Tarkovksy.

First thing is mirror reflections. You noticed how Kiarostami positioning his camera, so we see reflections of characters in mirror rather than characters themselves.

Secondly, it is slow pace and movement of camera. Camera steadily and static sits and observe, waiting for something to happen.

Third thing is long and very continuous shots, camera is very static also. It seems that nothing happens inside static sequences, but this is a tricky matter - celebration of silence and endlessness.

So, if you enjoyed Certified Copy as I did, you should watch Andrei Tarkovsky films as well.

Tarkovsky used above mentioned tricks his whole director's life and was and IS really known for his unique style.

I might say that Kiarostami is Iranian Tarkovsky.

Like Tarkovsky in style, but also like Antonioni in both style and content.
