Olga Kurylenko..was great as " Etain "

Olga Kurylenko ... As Etain was one of the main things I liked about this movie.
I liked the movie , I now read that it had 30 min cut out!
would love to see the full version.

But Olga was great as this silent character, and her "look" was great.

I cant figure how this movie was not liked.

I concur. I thought she fit the character very well. Maybe its because she had no lines. I understand the criticism that she doesn't look very tough, but she did look a little unhinged.

She was fantastic ! " I dont know weither to fight her or f... " Haha
She was so beautiful in this movie. She is the most beautiful woman out there !!

Terrific asset to the film.

Beats me. I thought it was very entertaining. 🐭

She did a good job, but from a historical point of view completely misplaced in the movie, because The Picts did not have female warriors like this.
I base this on The Cáin Adomnáin Law of Innocents (AD 697), which established a code of conduct for protecting non-combatants (women, children and monks) from military service and from the ravages of warfare.

That means some one like Etain and Aeron (the white haired female Pict warrior), would more likely be found at home taking care of the household.

... but from a historical point of view ...
LOL! You were seriously looking for cast iron historical perspectives? Look Icenian Boudica was running around at a similar time creating havoc for the Romans. I reckon in a movie speculating on the mystery of the missing 9th Legion, the producers have got every reason to include interesting female characters like Etain, if they feel so inclined. This ain't a documentary, nor does it claim to be a true story. I can accept that and just enjoy it as such.🐭

reply

I agree, and you might have added "alleged" missing IXth Legio. It is now almost certain they were re-located to what is now the Netherlands from Eboracum (York).

reply

Yes, the "alleged" disappearance of Legio IX Hispana is still debated energetically by historians and academics. Obviously I'm not sure, but lean to the mysterious Scottish disaster story, which the movie storyline utilizes. May be they did make it to the Netherlands, or may be it was only a detachment there. Whichever is true it seems the poor buggers that made up the last incarnation of the legion, suffered some calamity at some stage, in some corner of the Empire, which caused the legion to fade obscurely into the mists of history. There was no honourable retirement of the standard.

Love the way the following year's release, The Eagle, almost appears to be a planned sequel to this film.

Like the legionnaires, it seems likely we posters soon face our final hour too.🐭

reply

Yes,they did suffer some calamity, possibly somewhere in the Border area of Scotland. The Legion was very much under-strength and from what I have read, there were simmerings of dissatisfaction with some of their Officers amongst the legionaries. Historians' best guess is that they were attacked by local tribes, many were killed, and what was left, tried to escape South again in small groups and were killed later by other tribes or they voluntarily "went native", abandoning the standard & Rome.
The making of "The Eagle" was co-incidental and its release was delayed as "Centurion" went into theaters first.
Yes, only 6 days and we too face our final curtain. (Part of the reason, imho, has been excessive trolling/abuse on some sites and against some actors and it was decided enough was enough).

It's a shame an idiotic minority appear to have brought this drastic move on. I'm a regular contributor as I know you are and have to say I haven't noticed it all that much. But recently I tried posting to American Sniper and found that particular film's boards were clearly in the hands of 2 or 3 trolls. Simple as that! They must have a lot of time on their hands to work one film's boards all day long. I've never complained about anyone on this site, but I guess there has been some unrest, because shortly thereafter the boom came down.

Any way all the best for the future. BTW, I visited Scotland last year and true, enough, found it to be a magnificent place, just as I'd expected. 🐭

reply

It's the old story of the few spoiling it for the majority.
Trolls seem to have targeted only certain boards ; this board and some others have been relatively free of their ignorant abuse, but on others it has been relentless.
To name a mere two, Mark Wahlberg & Channing Tatum have had disgraceful slurs written against them, and my guess is some actors have said, more than enough. I am not a fan of many of these Tinseltown people but even for them, there has to be a line in the sand. Trolls never do get the message of course. That is their perversion. What a sad state of affairs.

Thank you your kind remarks about my home country, although I now live in England!

I'm no historian so I cannot comment on the accuracy of her character but I felt she was convincing despite her physical size. They didn't try to make her into some sort of invincible "xena warrior princess" kind of nonsense. They showed her as a violently angry woman with a lot of training and motivation, yet they acknowledged that she still had a female body as evidenced with her fight with the general. She was doing great when she kept her distance but once she got in close he head butted her to the ground showing she did have limitations. Even in her final battle it seemed that the protagonist backed off from her until she was in a small enclosed area where his strength could dominate in the long run. I found her convincing.

reply

She's tin like a model, it's very difficult to Believe she could endure such physical training and especially beat seasoned warriors (i.e.: musular men soldiers). I'm for equality but there is still important physical différences between sexes which doesn't make too much sense. But hey, it's a movie so I enjoyed it !

reply

Strangely, in the movie she starves herself so it goes with it.
Also she is a warrior who uses weapons. It isnt a hand-to-hand wrestling match.
