NOT A SYFY ORIGINAL!

OK, I can't take it anymore. I don't care how SyFy is selling Infestation. They did not produce it.

Everyone keeps calling this better than average for a Siffy movie and no matter how many times I say it in replies to posts, no one seems to be listening to me. So I started this topic to hopefully set the record straight.

Infestation was not made by or for Siffy; it was only purchased by Siffy when it couldn't get a theatrical distribution deal in the US. They get no credit whatsoever for anything involving its conception or creation, OK?

The script and pre-vis came straight from Kyle Rankin's fevered imagination. He sold it to Mel Gibson's Icon Productions as a theatrical feature. Mel's partner, Bruce Davey produced the film with Rankin as director.

It has played theatrically in other countries and is still doing so in fact. But since it's getting to be almost impossible to get distribution for smaller films in the US these days, a lot of them end up making deals with cable. That's what happened here.

Thanks for saying something about that. I was looking forward to this movie since I first saw the trailer and planning to see it in the theaters, but when I went on the syfy website it's listed as a syfy original movie.
They probably want a movie that's not complete crap on their credit list.

Interesting! Thanks for the info. I haven't read everything on this forum, so I'd missed your other posts.

So, my question is, is there anyway for us Yanks to get a hold of an un-edited version? You know, with the cursing and without the blurred boobs?

reply

Look on dvdpricesearch. They have an r-rated edition from various sources thru the internet.

It's the same edition that goes on sale everywhere October 13th. You can get it from amazon as well, it's the same thing... looking forward to this, hopefully it will deliver!

No wonder the writing was so good for such a moderate budget! And, I have to admit: the plot-twist involving the queen bug's call was totally unforeseen by me.

Bravo to the writer(s)!

P.S.---to whomever did see it theatrically. Did it cut off just as abruptly, at the ending credits, as it did on Syfy Channel?

reply

Actually, a lot of the "SciFi Originals" weren't actually produced by the SciFi Channel, and were in fact much like "Infestation", purchased whole cloth. They did take to producing some of their own, ostensibly because of the low quality of the features they could buy (though they didn't do too much better on their own). Still, this isn't a unique sitch for Infestation. SciFi just got very lucky in this one case.

It's a shame for "Infestation", as it could have played well enough theatrically (as long as the end didn't cut off like that). This was easily on par with "8 Legged Freaks", though the effects could have used a minor nudge here or there, and the story tightened up a hair.

It's odd that people are complaining about the lack of backstory about the bugs: no one really bothers to ask where zombie infestations come from.

reply

I don't know whay people are complaining about the bugs's back sotry; I though it was pretty clear from the movie: they're from space!

reply

I wonder, at the end, if the Strong Silent Guy was pointing toward a flock of giant birds eating the left-over space bugs?

Lol!

SyFy would be better off not claiming this horrid movie as their own. The continuity was terrible. The story had so many holes it was ridiculous. I love science fiction and I watched the entire movie out of curiosity. It could have been done better. There seemed to be more than one scene missing other than "The Sopranos" like ending.

reply

I'm with you, hollywood212--this one really missed the mark for me. I expect cheese and camp, and this fit into those categories, but seemingly without any effort behind it, if that makes any sense. I really think I've seen better on the Sci-Fi channel (SyFy--whatever).

Well, considering that it was like a SCARY MOVIE version of 28 DAYS LATER and STARSHIP TROOPERS, how could it _not_ be horrid and terrible?

I knew it!!! This was too damn good to be a SyFy original movie. This was way better than Sharknado.
