Times but no dates?

On the placards initiating each scene, there are places and times to inform the viewer, but no dates. It made following the progression of the movie difficult.

Does anyone know why they left out the dates? Who cared about the time of day as opposed to the date of the year?

Am I missing some historical context here?

I struggled with the timeline in the movie too. For someone who was unaware of the events at the time, you couldn't tell if the film was set over the course of a year, two years or whatever. It wasn't until I checked the storyline on here that I found all the films events happened in the space of three months. A meaningful start to the film would have helped a lot, there were no opening credits or anything else to give the viewer a time frame.

This means something, this is important.

It happened in 1968.

Didn't really slow me down at all... Time of day isn't important - you're right - particularly because we can see it physically on-screen, but I didn't need the time frame really, either. The film gave me the critical events of this story, in the order I needed to follow it. So, it didn't matter to me if it was three months, three days, or three years.

Now, as to the history of it, that's something to read about after watching the movie (or before).
