Look up "macguffin" (a classic plot device where an object, person, place which is central to the plot is seldom if seen at all during the story) in Wikipedia. There are at least a dozen other "magic objects" from films listed there. Not listed, but also included: Mr. Linderman (Heroes), the decoder box from U-571, and the Pink Panther diamond.
