I turned this off after the first scene.

My wife and I wanted to watch a comedy and this came up in the list. The first scene was horrible, with that awful sounding language and it wasn't funny at all. Moreover the subtitles didn't help much. What is a deduck or whatever they were calling him? We figured out it was a movie about Jews and you had to be Jewish to get it. I love Cohen brothers movies, but this movie was just ugly. Maybe we just weren't in the mood for this movie, but the first scene didn't capture my interest.

You missed a great movie-you don't have to be Jewish to get it, just have to be tolerant of other cultures.

reply

Hey tom.

The first ten minutes or so can be a bit disconcerting. It's not a culture intolerance as much as it is a period piece intolerance.

It's understandable. If you are not in the mood, or prepared for a film that takes place in another era, that's just a natural reaction.

But the first 10 minutes are just a short primer. The rest of the film plays out in suburban 1967 Minnesota.

If you appreciate the Coens at all, you will love the film. It is pure Coen Brothers realistic/absurd filmmaking.

You probably hit the stop button 1 minute too soon.

Give it another try, then tell us what you think.

I watched the intro, I watched maybe 5-10 more minutes until the wife says she wants a divorce, and I had to stop the movie because I got a phone call. Based on those minutes I saw, I don't want to see the rest of the movie now, but well, I will give it a try.

You really didn't see much of anything. I would suggest watching this movie a few times-it is very deep. These boards help in gaining a better understanding of the film.

This has nothing to do with tolerance. I watched the movie, supposed to be a comedy, sorry I didn't get it. I have great movies forom the coen brothers, like Fargo, no country for old men, ...
But let me ask you a question, is British commedy the same as American. Do you think 'keepin up appearances' was a big success in the US?
You make it sound like I have to like a movie, because its from another culture.
Or maybe better, if I dont like it, I am a racist.

reply

If this is in reply to my comment, then you misunderstood what I was saying. You don't have to try and steer my argument and make yourself the victim. I am NOT saying that if you don't like a movie from a different culture that a person is a racist-and how you got that from what I said is ridiculous.

Funny you should mention it, actually, Keeping Up Appearances is one of my favorite British sitcoms and has enjoyed a loyal following here in the states on Public television. " Are you free"....fantastic.

Actually, Jewish in America IS the American culture. As much as Irish, Italian, French, African or any other nationality. To act as if Jewish culture is foreign is ignorant, and demeaning. With all the talk of racism against blacks on the news these days, it's appalling the subtle racism against Jews that is getting worse every day. I guess they need their own Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson to pimp their causes, too.

open your mind a little bit, film is an art , its all about feelings, enjoy

I actually watched this a second time! Too bad you and your wife missed it. It was quite funny. That is, if you don't get a divorce over it or see a cloud in the sky and know you have cancer, or need to get to Canada in a rowboat!

You don't need to be Jewish, just open. But watch out for funnel clouds....

You turned this off after the first scene? Really? Perhaps this was a bit too advanced for your simple tastes? I'm surprised to see you state that you love Ethan & Joel's work, considering you can't spell their surname and show so little tolerance for the unusual.
