One of the most uncomfortable scences I've ever witnessed ....(SPOILERS)

Wow. That near rape scence by Joe Jr was extremely uncomfortable.
I just had a huge knot in my stomache throught the whole attempt.
Anyone else feel this way?

reply

I did too, and as uncomfortable as the scene was, I think it was very well played out by the actors.

I felt a knot in my stomach through most of the film with the feeling that something terrible was going to happen to Joe Jr. Great movie and I really enjoyed it but the uneasy worry I felt for Joe Jr. lasted a long time during and after the film for me.

reply

This was the second time that I saw the film, and still the aforementioned scene made me wince.
Christine and Tom really made it work, and thus made the following scenes work that much better.

Really, well that is an interesting reaction.
Creepy, but interesting.

Did really enjoy this movie but seen this scene coming a mile away . I was unconvinced in the way she fought Joe off . Dont get me wrong i did enjoy this movie but to me this scene was a real let down and in no was realistic. Any one else feel this way ?

reply

Agreed. I work with Down's, know many, have a family member, and this behavior is nothing real at all. These people have no guile and big hearts, but are frustrated by their limitations; that doesn't turn someone into a rapist. Weird and disturbing. Another reason not to like this movie.

im not an expert on downs but i but im assuming they have the same emotions as people without downs syndrome so a kid whos pretty damned strong doesnt have a full understanding of consequences and is going through an angry stage in life might be as capable of rape as anyone else in that situation. my only problem with the movie is that the ending seemed too damned easy everything seemed resolved and i didnt really get how just him dropping some dice fixed everything but i dont really care as long as i get to see christine lahti in a movie.

reply

In fairness, I would have done the same thing if I was sitting next to Lahti.
If I was making this movie, I would have had him follow through with the r*pe, and jump up after busting his nut and yell, "Joe Duma's the winnah!":-)

Seriously, it made me cringe and of the hundreds of Down's men I have encountered, they do not have the physical or emotional strength to overpower a woman. They do have the same emotions as everyone else, but without the deviousness to make somebody do what they don't want to do. They do go through angry stages, and they basically never win. They never get asked to the prom, or chosen for sports, or win an argument, etc. The world can be a pretty hard place for Down's kids and adults, who can't really compete at an equal level. People that aren't familiar with them can be cruel, and totally get away with it; what can the Down's person do? A little bit of kindness goes a long way, and part of their lack of guile is that they also lack cynicism; they are quick with a hug and smile and 'thank you'.

Good point about the resolution. Joe just dropped the dice and got on the bus. Whatever. I hope they make a Yonkers Joe 2, where he breaks his dad out of jail.:-)

reply

For Joe Jr. it was not the physical act of dropping the dice that helped him. It was his father's belief in him (as expressed to Janice on the strip), and pulling off a con with his father's crew. Once he truly felt accepted, he could move on towards the group home.

reply

The scene was supposed to make you uncomfortable. I guess the filmmaker and the actors did their job well.

reply

I was surprised that Yonkers Joe could pull Joe Jr. off of her and give him a beating, you know with Joe Jr. being a wrestling champ and all.

reply

I for one thought it was an excellent rape scene. One of the best!

I was on the edge of my seat the entire scene, wondering what would happen at the end!

What did happen at the end? Something happened and I had to run out of the room so I never saw the end of the rape scene.

Uh oh, I think I might have to run out of the room again!

reply

I think that was the point. The filmmakers and actors did their job. I never believed for a minute he was going to actually go all the way with it. The tenor of the film wasn't that dark and by then you could tell the ending was going to be more uplifting. If he had completed the rape the storyline is effectively demolished right there.
