Death Note

Yup... another American rip-off. Ugh!

reply

yeah, i think so too...only instead of devilish genius boy we have two slutty drama queens (judging from the preview on youtube anyway)
..this movie is not even worth stealing from the internet

reply

I agree.

reply

Cool! More people that think so. I made a post on this board about how it was a ripoff.

reply

american ripoff?
um..most of the actors and the people making the movie are canadian
it was even shot in canada

reply

Ooops correction... another Western-ized rip-off then... LoL.

reply

i hate ignorant people. just because canada and america are on the west side doesnt mean they're the same. then you would be insulting mexico and south america... they are not all the same. so if youre going to insult something get your facts right.

reply

Um... calm down? Geez... drama much?

reply

I, Canada, America, Mexico, South America. If you're going to call people ignorant at least write a proper sentence....

reply

i dont really get your i,canada, america, mexio thing, but... all im upset about is its a candian based movie. most of the actors and everyone involved with the movie is canadian... yeah its on a channel that is american but im sure canada has lifetime. why sit here and call it an american rip off when its not even american. thats why i was saying some people are ignorant. im not sure if youre talking about what i wrote or what other people wrote. but im just making a point that the original post is wrong because this isnt an american rip off.

reply

You called someone ignorant and failed to write a sentence on a grammar school level.

reply

While there really was not much wrong with what they wrote, if you are going to try to correct someone, you should try and get things right yourself.
Firstly, grammatically speaking, you can't end a sentence with ellipsis, unless there is more that you wanted to say but decided to omit it to sound less like an *beep*
Secondly, your "grammatically correct" sentence makes no sense what-so-ever. "I, Canada, America..." They were including Mexico and South America in a secondary sense, their problem seems to stem from Canada and the United States being lumped into one. They are actually said they hate Canada and the United States being lumped together and then said that if someone is going to do that they may just as well add Mexico and South America in, probably with the thinking that it's all the same continent.
Thirdly. Let's just look at what you said. You try to correct them but make one of the biggest faux pas that practically every single human makes. The United States of America is NOT "America". Just because the majority call it "America" to be lazy, it is NOT. The continent that it is part of is America. It is divided into North America (Canada, the U.S., and Mexico), Central America (Costa Rico, El Salvador, Guatemala, et al.), and South America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, et al.). The North and Central are considered to be part of the same subcontinent, North America but combined they are the Americas, or simply: America.
Now, if you are going to try and educate someone in the future, might I suggest two things? (Rhetorical question, I am suggesting them nonetheless.)
A. If you are going to indicate they are writing an improper sentence, write a proper one yourself.
B. Try to do make sure what you write is factual.

Also, before anyone, including this "Voivod666" try to point out that this was a post from 2007, yes, I am indeed aware of that. Beauty of the internet, once you put something on here, it's pretty much here forever and it will always be "debated". At least until someone comes along and manages to shut down the "information superhighway".

reply

It's not ignorant, and you need to calm down. A lot of American movies are shot in Canada (especially Toronto) because the government there gives a lot of tax incentives for them to shoot there. Just because a movie is shot in Canada doesn't mean it's a Canadian movie. It's not ignorant to assume it's American when Lifetime is an American TV channel, and the production company is American. The nationality of the actors is totally irrelevent. Take a chill pill

reply

:-) Canada is in North America.. therefore Canadian is also American

reply

Well, Canada is in America after all

reply

Yeah, I thought Death Note as well when I first saw the preview. But you're wrong about one thing--the movie's canadian, as are all the actors in it.

reply

Yeah. sh it sux. If Viz Media finds out they'll get pissed, lawl.

It's been a while since I've killed anyone. I kinda miss it. You wanna watch?

reply

NOT AS PLANNED!

"Trying" is an illusion made by those who can not accept the fact that they can not do anything.

reply

Okay, I'm American, but I totally agree with you that we rip off so much stuff from England, and our stuff always sucks!

reply

"american ripoff?
um..most of the actors and the people making the movie are canadian

Ummm....Do you think USA is the only continent in America? Go look at your map again, you'll notice that Canada is the top half of North America.

reply

American or not it's still a rip off. Death Note kicked ass & I hope people who watch this movie will come here, about death note & watch the original.

reply

Honestly, you would think that with how successful Death Note is, they could at least give it more respect than a Lifetime movie. This is freaking unbelievable.

reply

Oh, and a book where anything you write comes true... making it specific to death doesn't make it original. They had a very similar plot from a kids show! Death Note is NOT the first to do this plot!

Look at me, I'm the bum of the future!

reply

yeah, but look at the timing. Death Note is the most recent, phenomenally popular example. Plus, it's "Devil's Diary," not just some random magical diary. Shinigami ~ Devil.

reply

Shinigami aren't devils in Japanese mythology, they are psychopomps, well to be precise they can cover any death deity (that's the literal translation "Death God") and it's not a native concept but an imported one. Soo, ya it has its similarities to Death Note it has its differences.

reply

Actually, shinigami are considered more along the lines of Guardians of Death/Reapers. Not to mention if you guys are gonna whine about somebody using the same storyline, you should take a look at all the similar storylines that came out way before death note. Not that I think it matters if a story is similar to another, I just care whether or not it's a story that I enjoy.

"Ummm....Do you think USA is the only continent in America? Go look at your map again, you'll notice that Canada is the top half of North America. "

People usually shorten United States of America to just America. So when someone from the USA hears someone say "America", then they usually think that person means the USA. So it isn't like the person didn't know where Canada was.

reply

Um, I think you mean country. All of North America (USA and Canada) are in the same continent.

reply

First of all, I have no interest in this movie, I'd just thought I'd state the following:

Shut up, Japanophiles, and this Canada-America argument is ridiculous. Isn't there something less trivial you could be arguing about?

reply

lol wow you need to lurk a little bit moar.

Death Note was probably a rip off of something else.

The Basic concept actualy sounds like it's existed in Ficiton as long as the Ablity to Write has.

One question, Have any of you actually watched the movie?
Only three posts on here were made after the premier.
I don't understand how you can judge it and say its the same as so many others, if you've never seen it.
I myself haven't seen it so I can't make any comments on whether it is the same of not,but if your don't give it a chance, you really have no idea what you are talking about when you make statements saying its a rip off or anything to that liking.

reply

Quite a few other people were having a similar mutiny on Wikipedia.

I didn't see it, unfortunately. I wanted to. But I see it more as a homage than anything. And I'm a huge Death Note fan.

And people are right, Death Note was not first. I remember an old Friday the 13th: The Series episode (1970's-80's) where a supernatural notebook did whatever was written in it. It is not original. It is not new. It all depends upon how it is executed.

reply

It doesn't matter if Death Note didn't come up with the idea first. The fact is that the popular anime series made this type of story popular. So I have to agree the Devil's Diary is nothing but a Death Note rip.

What pisses my off, is when writer's or directors or producers of the film entertainment industry tries to pass off work as if they created something totally original. Why can't they just admit they were heavily influenced by the popular anime series Death Note.

I'm a producer of independent film Ominous the movie and I'll be the first to admit that our movie was heavily influenced by Japanese Horror films along with a few original American films.

reply

...Death Note wasn't a rip, it's an original anime from Japan. I'm pretty sure the idea of an evil promising notebook has been around centuries longer than any of us here. I'm pretty sure it didn't rip off anything else, seeing as anime usually consists of ORIGINAL ideas. Have you ever seen the Japanese horror industry copy movies from Americans? No, it's usually the other way around.
