One would have thought that

there would have been an African-American amongst these four friends. I am not saying that there SHOULD be, but it's rather surprising that there isn't. Surprising and unusual. And it's not so common to have someone of Lena's ethnicity in these type of stories either, is it?

In a spinoff series called 3 willows by Ann brashareswhich centers on a friendship very similar to the sisters, there is a girl from Ghana.

Wildcattin'...Wildcattin'. Pow! I'm gonna go.

Okay, I didn't know that. Thanks.

Why is it surprising?

I just have the impression that it's more a rule than an exception to include an African-American character in such a setting. Come to think of it, there would probably also have been a jewish girl in the group, rather than a greek one. But I might of course be wrong about both.

I see what you're saying but these movies are based off of books written a long time ago. All of the characters are perfectly described as the actors :) I think that's pretty rare when the actors look just like the book described them.
