Let's talk about Julia

Let me start by saying that I'm NOT a Julia fan. She did NOT handle being upstaged by Carmen well at ALL. Planting seeds of doubt in her head, going after her man, talking crap to the director.... all of this = VERY BAD FRIEND.

BUT....

Maybe there was a deleted scene that could've explained this better, but I was really disappointed with Carmen after she first got the role. She's not there to act, and her getting the lead surprised her and Julia equally. Whereas by comparison Julia's life is based on her acting career. Pretty much the only thing we know about Julia is that her acting seems to be the most important thing in her life.

Now in Carmen's position as a friend I would've sat Julia down right from the start to talk with her and find out how she felt about me getting the lead. Not necessarily apologize about it but maybe something along the lines of, "Hey I know that you really wanted this role. It wasn't my intent to get it. Do you want to talk about this?"

I just keep thinking that maybe if Carmen had done something along those lines and had she and Julia had a really good talk from the get-go that maybe it would've curbed her evil impulses. But the way the movie was put together it appeared that Carmen didn't give any thought as to what taking the lead role as a novice might feel like to her almost-professional actress friend.

Anywhos, that's just my thoughts. After repeated viewings of the movie I find myself neither Team Carmen or Team Julia. :-P

I find myself feeling very little sympathy towards Julia. Of course she was upset that Carmen got the role instead of her. Who in her position wouldn't be jealous or upset? However, I don't think that excuses her behavior. Being an actress, she must know that, whether it's fair or not, sometimes you don't get a lead or people who are less experienced sometimes get the role.

Just my two cents.

Julia did wrong. Carmen gave her a piece of her mind. Julia did seem to be ashamed and remorseful after Carmen steamed off. The story seems to leave an open end to their relationship, so hopefully Julia will come back for the sequel. She's a likable character and can be developed further for an interesting twist.
