Why do people feel this movie is bad?

Why do people feel this movie is bad?
Do they not understand the story? Or maybe the comedy bits are too mainstream for them?
What is it?

I'm not good with the advice. Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?

reply

It confused me also. I thought the movie was witty, cynical, funny and well acted. Bullock was great in it and so was Thorton.

reply

agree bullock act great in this movie.

well, i guess the movie topic not easy to draw people attention, that's y their box office not so good and probably lost quite a lot money if their announce movie budget is real.

reply

Yes Paulfitzpa-- the secret word is Cynical.

The little slapstick moments couldn't save it however as a comedy. The acting was great, yet the concept was somewhat depressing.

It just displayed the 'same sheit-- different day'
Aren't we going through this right now in the US with Hillary and Donald?

reply

It wasn't funny, and it was far too predictable and lame to be enjoyed as a drama. I can see why it flopped.

reply

*possible spoilers*

At least for me it wasn't predictable...I thought the kid had another agenda throughout the whole movie and then when he showed up at the end, I thought "Ok here it comes". But he just wanted to give Castillo the pic, and then was let down when he found out about the IMF.

I agree. Predictable and full of clichés masquerading as wisdom. Her acting in it was mostly stiff and wooden too.

reply

Cliched, and cynical without being savage enough. That was my problem with it, anyway.

"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"

reply

Too much thinking involved for the average imbecile; then of course the acknowledgment of the reality of US foreign policy... corruption greed and theft of indigenous resources through monetary enslavement

reply

So you blame it on the viewers - the ones who aren't you. Everyone has different tastes. The film just wasn't good enough to bridge all the gaps. Great that it worked for you. For me, just another B- Sandra Bullock film. "It was fine". I'm not an imbecile. I don't know about you, though :-)

reply

because the truth is so bitter to swallow they prefer to ignore and dismissed it
we are all puppets of rich megalomaniac poweful liars we vote for

deal with it !!!!!

reply

It wasn't commercial enough: a lot of people gloss over with topics such as 'elections' and 'South America.' The title is terrible. It was poorly marketed. It was entertaining - no one does Sandy Bullock quite like Sandy Bullock - but it never quite got to the satiric level of Wag the Dog, the melodrama of Argo, or even the cynicism of Thank You For Smoking.

reply

Exactly - the topic was interesting, but other movies have dealt with similar material much more gracefully.

"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"

reply

There are people who already knew that anyway, without a movie needed to pretend that it was cutting edge insight, disguised within a formulaic story. 

"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"

reply

For me, it didn't feel like they knew what the movie was. It has pratfalls and then serious political statements, and then insider candidate election stuff and at one point, something about mental illness? Just too much in one movie. The tone just kept shifting.

reply

Yeah, may be it confused people. How can it be about something important but have "Bullock's funny" in it at the same time?! (like the slingshoting after the party, she loves to laugh.)
You do have to like her to like this movie but if you do, it's good.

reply

Idk, I'm a fan of Sandra and I thought she was very good in this, but like other posters have opined, I found the movie to be very predictable. And the tale of American exploitation of South American countries through political nd economic manipulation is an old story. I just didn't think OBIC brought anything new to the table.

reply

Hear, hear! Exactly.

"I was made to understand there were grilled cheese sandwiches here"

reply

I didn't think there was an ounce of creativity in the whole movie. The dialog and characters were formulaic. And anyone who couldn't predict, from minutes into the film, what would happen starting with the election is, to put it gently, not familiar with movies. There were so many clues.

That's why I thought the movie was not just bad, but insultingly bad.

reply

I was thinking the same thing. Just saw this movie a couple days ago and while it was definitively flawed, it had some great moments and good performances. IMDB rating (and boards) always surprises me :D

reply

Should have been called "Our Brand Is Boredom".
