Opening Weekend: Why did it make so little?

What was wrong with the marketing? Or was there something wrong with the timing?

Before this movie was released, I was expecting it to have the same success as Passion of the Christ (which received worse reviews from critics than Splice) because that movie's incredible box-office proves controversy = lots of free publicity.

Splice has a controversial premise too, so why didn't this movie have the same pre-release effects?

I guess they promoted it wrong. From what I remember seeing the trailers on TV, they made it seem like it was a gross-out horror movie(when it's really a science fiction drama with touches of horror). Maybe some of the images shown kinda freaked people out. And as you said, the premise is rather controversial but maybe some people didn't care for it. Now, there may be a bit more feedback and admiration for this film that it may get cult movie status.

You were expecting this to gross over 300m? What planet are you living on?

Strange sci-fi film rated R. That's box office poison.

It wasn't very good.
