Question for anyone with DVD copy -- subtitles

Are the English subtitles in American DVDs standard file-based graphics you can turn on and off, or are they "hard-coded" onto the screen so that you cannot turn them off? I've seen an AVI file version of the movie with hard-coded subtitles, and I don't want to buy a DVD that is like that.

Now I can answer my own question. The US DVD has hard-coded subtitles, which SUCKS. In fact, it also has a second set of "SDH" subtitles that allow you to double the clutter on the screen. Can anyone enlighten me on this? Surely the film wasn't shown in theaters in Brazil or Portugal or other non-English speaking countries like this. Can anyone tell me where can I get a "clean" copy?
