Plot Hole You Could Drive a Truck Through (Spoiler)

The whole subject of Fermat's Cell Phone call really bothered me. I'm all for suspension of disbelief, but this annoyed the *beep* out of me.

- Alright, so first, the 'guests' assume that Fermat must be innocent, because there's no way he could have faked a phone call to himself.

- Secondly, they discover that Hilbert is the one who orchestrated the trap due to the fact that he was the only one not in the room when the call was recieved.

Let me get this straight. You're telling me that a guy who can rig up 4 penumatic presses to be remote controlled via a PDA can't making a f'ing voicemail and set it up to automatically dial his phone and play the recording? For the love of... I COULD DO THAT WITH A MICROPHONE AND SKYPE.

The whole charade was geared around making them believe there was a 'mystery host' outside of the room, he used the PDA to turn on and off the car headlights at a specific time, setup the GPS coordinates etc. and after seeing all this remote operation, they think it's logical to assume that Fermat couldn't have setup his computer to send a fake phonecall? Are you kidding me?

You're right. I wouldn't call that a plot hole though -- Hilbert, for some reason, just didn't think to set it up that way. Besides, he had to leave the room some time to plant the drug (I forget what it's called) in Fermat's belt buckle.

The only problem I'd see with setting up an "automatic dialer" is when (and how) to trigger it -- It had to be after dinner. Even then, this wouldn't be a real problem -- he could've set up a concealed button somewhere in the room to trigger the call.

You got it wrong.

-First they assumed Fermat was trying to kill them and not innocent, so at that time they thought it was a fake phone call. Where you paying any attention? They thought Fermat was trying to kill the guy who run over his daughter!

-Later they grow suspicion about Fermat really trying to kill them and how about if he wasn't the host? They only summed up 1+1 and with that in mind they came up with a theory incriminating Hilbert.

Where is the plot hole? Or any hole at all?

Nice post, bad conclusion though. The whole thing is that they couldn't know when Fernat arrived en therefore couldn't know when dinner would be over. The other things were time driven, this wasn't.

Speaking of major plot holes, has someone pointed out that the dumbwaiter shaft must be moving with the floor if it is staying directly behind the blackboard? Which, obviously, cannot be the case.

reply

The way I see it, the elevator would only be behind the blackboard when the room had reached a certain size. Hilbert built the room, so he would know when to escape.
