Solid flick*spoilers*

Title says it all. Good cinematography, great fights, funny moments, and an ending that simply can't be beat.

Although some of the odd/quirky stuff could have been cut (in my humble opinion). The human bowling for example, or the silly rock n roll band, also the girl singing. But beyond those few moments, this was a damn entertaining movie.

Here's hoping the sequel lives up...

No way, thats what helps it define its own identity. Its meant to be a manga come to life. The occasional quirky bit of over the top hysterical comedy like the bowling livened up an otherwise serious movie. It helped make the badguy a little more human too. All the stuff you listed was what brought the real 'Japanese flavour' to it. Without it, it'd be just another american highschool movie.

This was a great flick and exceeded my expectations. The bowling didn't bother me but I thought the singing could've been left out as well.

Cut out those stuff? That's what makes it fun and quirky and different. Besides, it won't be totally manga-esque without those things, and as far as Miike Takashi fans knows, he is also a guy who loves mangas and games. And we enjoyed just as much as he enjoyed envisioning them. Plus, it's a different brand of dark humour, which I thoroughly enjoy. Watch Crows Explode if you want a film that's taken a more serious approach.... in my opinion, that one didn't have much of an impact..... felt like it tried too hard to be hardcore...

And the sequel did live up ^^

I think the human bowling scene serves the purpose of reminding the audience this is a manga adaptation and you dont' have to take it seriously or look for realism in it. That scene enables the viewer to believe some stuff that will happen later, stuff obviously more realistic than the bowling scene but still pretty exaggerated.
