My review

This was fantastic and I loved it. Streep is great and I really enjoyed all the singing and dancing. The film has a beautiful message about love, tolerance, and acceptance. I know there was criticism of James Corden's casting and his performance, but I honestly thought he did a really good job. There are some very funny moments and some really sweet touching, heartfelt moments. Attending this prom might just leave with you a song in your heart, a smile on your face, and maybe a tear in your eye. My rating is a 9/10.

I often agree with your reviews Allaby but I have to say I thought The Prom was extremely average. It’s “jazz hands” schmaltz from the start to the end. Way too many songs, most of which are instantly forgettable, and an epic running time that can’t be justified by the paper-thin plot.

Yes, it had a nice message, but it seems almost a decade too late to be relevant in any way. I agree, Corden was fine, nothing offensive about his portrayal of a camp Broadway baby, but nothing particularly stunning about it either. Meryl did her best as she always does and was in fine singing voice, but all the sentimental flashiness going on around her seemed way beneath her, if I’m honest. Nicole Kidman seemed to pop in and out of the storyline without ever making much of an impact.

I gave it a very weak 2/5. It’s heart was in the right place but for me it was a misfire.
