so what exactly were they doing? (SPOILERS)

I didn't understand the whole movie, because English isn't my first language, and some parts at the end left me confused.

I understand that Emily lied about what they did in the woods, but what were they doing? just standing in circle around a fire and telling their secrets? that's it?

so what was it about the witchcraft? why was Mary telling people she was a witch?

and another thing I didn't get was, what was Emily's plan with Levinia? why did they attack her in the woods? and didn't Mary and the sisterhood (her friends) not wonder where she was that night?

also, the group that made that plan, were they on with Emily about the lies? they knew emily was lying and still went on with it?

thanks for anyone that can clarify! I liked the story of the movie but I think it could have been executed better. Georgia was great as Mary, but I thought Kara's acting was a little poor. Her character came across as really awkward, I don't know if that was wanted or not but it was weird.

Well as for what the girls where doing in the woods; you are right, they were standing in a circle sharing secrets, dreams, and hopes that they didn't dare to say to the rest of the world, then they burned the secrets in the fire so that no one else would find out. That's also were the vow of silence comes in, that they weren't allowed to share all the things said at the meetings with anyone else. It was a safe haven for the girls to speak up without being judged.

The witchcraft was just something Emily made up, trying to make the Sisterhood look like a cult instead of what it really was. Mary just said she was a witch to mock all those around her who thought she was one.

Emily and her friends planned to get Lavinia to confess what they were really up to – or most likely, scare her into confessing to the lies that themselves had spread. And as for if the girls wondered where she was that night: not all girls met up at the same time, it was always 5 girls who met up, you get to see how there are several groups of 5 that meet up at various places that night. Lavinia wasn't a part of Mary's group that night, she was suppose to be at home, which is why they didn't wonder where she was.

It's unknown if the other girls knew that Emily's accusations were false, but I'm guessing they did. They most likely were mad about not being picked for the Sisterhood either, since in the beginning of the movie you can see Sarah (one of Emily's friends) complain how they picked a girl named Hilda instead of one of them. So they, like Emily, probably wanted to ruin the Sisterhood – it's one of those "if I can't have it, no one can" situations.

And about Kara's character; she was suppose to be the outcast, so it's possible that they made her awkward on purpose, but it could just as well be Kara who was awkward in the role. I think it depends on who you ask. Anyway, I hope this gave you some clarity about what was going on.

thanks for the great answers, now I understand it better! So in reality they weren't doing anything bad at all huh...
liked the 'twist' at the end!

I think the thing about Kara is that I found it hard to see her as an outcast, as I think she's quite pretty! But yeah, I guess anyone can be an outcast.

They were sharing their inner thoughts by campfire which gave them spiritual relief.
