Out of guilt and shame for Lavinia's death, Emily hangs herself and leaves a suicide note.

Sue, realizing what a terrible, hysterical idiot mother she is, locks all of the kids responsible for Lavinia's death in a shed and burns them alive, with herself inside.

Why should Emily get any forgiveness and redemption?

People who bully others into suicide should have their lives ruined forever - jail, no college, blackballed from decent society.

i agree w/ OP...A lesson we females never learn is not to flaunt and then exclude...I think this was Mary's realization in the end...that all young females are vulnerable and that anybody could have tripped up the way Emily did...but that she had more power than Emily did by shining out as opposed to wallowing in a depressed and lonely shadow like Emily was doing. coming out at the end to march with the others was a tribute to life and a posthumous honor to Lavinia
