What do you mean, 'It's Just a Movie?'

People who defend movies like this by saying "it's just a movie!" fail to realize that how we think is entirely dependent on what we are exposed to, and that if all we do is watch mindless crap and never challenge ourselves to think, slowly the society will degenerate.
If people are not products of what they see and read, then why did so many Communist and Fascist dictators in the past try to censor what was in the media and the libraries to prevent an overthrow?
People who solely watch films for popcorn-style entertainment are highly unlikely to be the people who go out and do their research to find out more about their world. And guess what? When under a democracy, it is implied that citizens are informed. But most of us aren't, are we? We take everything at face value, and that's how politicians can move us around like sheep.

Btw, if you're going to try and respond by calling me an "elitist," think about what you're saying first. I'm not "mocking you from my ivory tower," I'm encouraging all people to strive to reach their full potential.
Appreciate your brains rather than neglect them. Because hell, whichever species has the most powerful brain is the most dominant species of a planet.

Yes I'm sure your brain will rot if you actually go see this movie and not bitch about it on some internet forum. Guess what? People with kids and family who actually go see this movie probably have a better and brighter lives than you.

fail to realize that how we think is entirely dependent on what we are exposed to,
And you fail to realise that about 70-80% of one's personality is biologically set while only 30-20% is a manifacture of their society. Though it's only a theory (a stronge one at that) it does show that we (as humans) do not entirely depend on our environment. It isn't just nurture - nature plays a large part in the game of life, too.

"70-80% of one's personality is biologically set"

Yes, but it's also been proven that certain genetically predisposed traits such as shyness can be overcome, so the environment can play a big role on your behavior if you are making an active effort.

reply

While that is true, I was arguing the point that one's behavious is not "entirely dependent" on their environment.

You're acting as if this movie is going to be harmful for your brain. Hey, kids got through Saved by the Bell, some even grew up with it and saw every episode and turned out fine.I don't see how this movie can kill brain cells. I'm not going to watch it, because it simply doesn't interest me, but I'm certainly not going to preach about it like those hypocritical PETA, Green Peace, hippie tree hugging love = peace bastards, which is what you're doing. Except on a message board. Jesus !@#$% Christ. You're just as annoying as the movie producers themselves.

reply

Someone that watches films for the scopes of entertainment must be a sheep moronic. The films are not for entertainment.

mocking you from my ivory tower

I'll take Falkor and be there in a couple of minutes.

But seriously, I agree with you. Saying things like "So what! It's a kids movie" doesn't justify anything. We got top quality kids films throughout the 90's, Toy Story was such a clever, heart-warming film. So much better than this crap. It doesn't matter if it's a kids movie, a bad movie is a bad movie.

By, "It's just a movie," we mean "It's just a movie!" How hard is it for you to learn that? Looky here, you're complainnig about something you have a choice not to watch. People who watche this movie would forget about it in a week or so. How would this make an impact like, let's say, The Godfather! NEWSFLASH! IT DOESN'T! It doesn't even make a scratch in the surface! You expect a movie for kids to affect the movie industry this big that you, an adult, I suspect, would bash on a kids movie? How pathetic is that?

Let's try this. Watch the movie. That would shut you up. There's a thing called never judging a book by its cover. You'd feel stupid after you see that the trailer was basically a joke and has nothing to do with the movie overall. It doesn't even show what the movie is about so I implore you, watch it. It will such you up. I know it. It shut a bunch of people up after they saw the movie. No doubt will it have the same affect on you. You know why? Because you're judging on the trailer which is, at best, a joke to the audience. It's basically shouting, "This is a bad trailer! Now endure it and see how horrible it is!" You know the trailer is a joke. It looks horrible but it absolutely has nothing to do with the movie. It's in a matter of time people like you would learn it.

"You know the trailer is a joke. It looks horrible but it absolutely has nothing to do with the movie."
"Looky here, you're complainnig about something you have a choice not to watch."

if the thing telling me about the movie, the trailer, is lying to me about what the movie is, then how do I have a choice to watch/not watch the actual movie? Wouldn't I be entering the theater fooled, and thus not choosing to see Beverly Hills Chiuhuahua, but rather the "joke" advertised to me in the trailer?

"You expect a movie for kids to affect the movie industry this big that you, an adult, I suspect, would bash on a kids movie? How pathetic is that?"

Why can't adults bash on a kids' movie? Aren't these movies made by adults? Can't one adult critique another adult's work? And everything made affects the movie industry in some way. If this is a lazy piece of work, whether it inspires one movie or twenty movies that are just as bad, it's still a lazy piece of work. If we buy movie tickets expecting directors and studios to present us with the best work they can make, then the directors and studios should try to do their jobs.

"How would this make an impact like, let's say, The Godfather!"

You may have a good point here. But please explain to me, logically, why this movie has less of an impact than the Godfather. Not "because it does" or "because the critics said so," or because "Godfather won lots of awards."

reply

Because people who are bashing this movie now, without seeing it, would forget about it in a year. The people who saw the movie and enjoyed it would forget about the movie in a week.

I don't want my nephews subjected to this crap. I want them to understand the difference between a quality film and $h!t like this.

But you've never seen it before...this is the thing that every conversation boils down to: Did you ever see it? They made the line, Never judge a book by its cover. There's a good reason why.

reply

Why don't you let your nephew decide what he likes and dislikes? Isn't that the same as overbearing religious parents who don't let their children explore the "outer" world?
Your nephew has a brain, right? He has his own morals, ideas and thoughts. I'm sure he can choose what he wants to like and what he doesn't want to like without any help.
