Did they really try and convince people nobody was murdered in USSR

No, no, no... it's not that they were trying to convince US (as in us watching as an audience). They "tried" to or enforced this idea onto the oppressed people in the movie. We, as the audience, were suppose to realize this was how they were treated and controlled.
