What is that city called?

Do you know what some of the cities are in the movie? In particular:

a) At the beginning - the very square looking beige houses, with the big castle in the middle
b) Also at the beginning, the little society on the edge of some large island, directly in the middle of wetlands

a) the town is the ancient town of Djenné, Mali ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Djenn%C3%A9 ) (at around 00:23)
