PR For Gucci?? I'm confused :s

So as you probably know, most of this film's $13 million funding came from PPR Group, a large luxury-brand consortium including Gucci and others.

Yet it seems to be, on the face of it, an anti-consumerist work, suggesting a return to simpler living.

These two facts don't seem to sit well together and I find myself wondering what exactly PPR was aiming at with this movie. What is their angle on it? I have one idea, after thinking about this for a good while, but I wonder if anyone else has thought about it or has any theories?

Maybe SOME people with power & influence actually want to make some sort of difference.

well, to me, this is rather obvious : François Pinault buys himself (and his companies) a conscience and a good image. In France, this movie had a really huge impact (there were elections on the day following its broadcasting) and adding. He's so rich that he doesn't mind spending millions on a painting or sculpture. So, $13 million is not a lot for, here, he can even have some payback on the dvd/blu-ray sales. Might even be a rather good investment.
