Undercurrent of misogyny

I agree with the one female critic who slammed this film as misogynistic. After watching it, I agree. I see it. Just look at Cameron Diaz's character, June Haven. It makes me wonder why Diaz signed on do this dumbed-down role? This film treats women like naive, docile, powerless creatures. Maybe she wanted to work with Tom Cruise again? I found it interesting when Roy says to another woman that June is a "nobody, just somebody I picked up along the way". Its so true I doubt Angelina Jolie would touch this role. It would've made sense if it were a tongue-in-cheek character, but its not.

There's nothing wrong with damsel-in-distress sort of characters, but if they lack intelligence and substance, they become irritating. The June character never uses her head. She's always clueless about everything. She doesn't know when she's being tricked, when danger is imminent(the scene before the shootout where she jumps the gun---no pun intended---before Roy counts the three) or what's happening around her(the airplane scene). Her character's head is perpetually in the clouds..."Where am I?"..."Who are you?"..."I don't know what is going on". She's always getting drugged, bound, controlled, etc. She relies too much on Roy to save her. She hardly does anything--except fire off a few rounds here and there--empowering.

I think part of the reason this film didn't work is because it takes itself very seriously. I could've worked as a spoof.

What's beef? Beef is when I see you, guaranteed to be in ICU --The Notorious B.I.G.

It's interesting that you could have worked as a spoof. How exactly would that work?

In any case June shows she is capable when she manages to 'kidnap' Roy at the end from what appears to be some sort of secured facility. Also most would act exactly as she did given the situation she was thrown into.

Im gonna take a wild guess that the OP is pro-fem man-hater dateless & desperate in her 40's who will probably be single for the rest of her life.

Anyone who thinks this film takes itself too seriously needs to take that foreign object of her asz.

I think any normal person would be acting the way June was in the situations she gets into and Roy isn't way better at handling those situations because he's male it's because he's been trained and has experience with these kinds of situations. But by the way, ditzy girls exist. Stupid girls exist. Should they never be represented in movies? Is having a single character act that way really misogynist? Whenever there's only one female character in a movie people attack every flaw she has as if the character is meant to be a representative of the whole gender. It doesn't make sense. Does every movie really need to give a completely balanced view of every single category of human being they portray?

I also didn't feel that the movie really took itself very seriously. It seemed pretty light hearted and tongue in cheek to me.

BUMP

These complaints about misogyny, showing an average woman who has never held a gun acting like a fruit cake when facing down a sh!tkioad of guns is insane. Normal, average men would be flipping out in those situations.

But, June eventually learned how to be tough and awesome... yes, after watching and studying Miller. But she has to learn somewhere. That's how life works. It's too bad these annoying feminazis can't look outside of their little fantasy worlds to see what reality looks like.

You completely missed the point. The line "nobody, just somebody I picked up along the way" was his part of keeping her out of danger. At that point Cruises character doesn't know how well she can fully handle herself and thinks it safer to remove her. Her character evolves during the movie.

to the OP, oye!

June's X didnt act much smarter... and guess what, he's male, even a fire fighter - trained to handle running into burning buildings.

It was a fun flick, the chicks I know thought it was cute. Prob better than that Heigle Kutcher flick too! :P

Also, the bad guy was male. Not every female lead can be Xena.

Wheewh --- I knew someone else thought the same way I did...overall I enjoyed the movie and could see what 'they' were trying to accomplish with this movie. So ultimately if you let it it was fun.

OP is either trolling or didn't watch the whole film.

Diaz' character is clueless at the beginning, but by the end of the film, she has saved Tom Cruise and become a very competent secret agent-type.

reply

No. You can find an undercurrent of anything if you wanted to. I could say Tom Cruise made potentially fatal mistakes that a highly trained agent shouldn't have ever made. How could he have not made sure Cameron Diaz's cellphones were off and in his possession?

reply

And she's never played a dumb ass before?

Something About Mary. She wasn't the brightest bulb in that one.

The Sweetest thing, again playing a horny bimbette.

How is her character lacking in intelligence? She was thrown into a very dangerous position, dangerous and confusing. What was she supposed to be a rambo type in a dress. Who knows when they are being tricked, that's why it's called being tricked. She's in the clouds because he keeps drugging her so she really doesn't know where she is when she wakes up, by the way being drugged is not her fault. As for her dependence of Roy to save her why is that so far fetched, she's dealing with some heavily armed, dangerous ppl, how the heck is she supposed to save herself.

In this situation a woman not trained in espionage, or being a spy would be " naive, docile and powerless", in fact if she weren't naive, docile and powerless I would have thought what a dumb movie. No average woman off the street would know how to handle being thrown into a situation like that one.

And what is so wrong about having a man save you?

I think June was meant to represent 'us'. 99.9% of real people wont know how to act when thrown into an over the top situation like that, which is different from most movies and shows, where regular people seem to know exactly how to act, like if they were already trained by the CIA. With that said...

I doubt Angelina Jolie would touch this role.
which is true... In Hollywood terms, I think the character Diaz played was just too weak.
