Mamet must be stopped

Dear Hollywood and Indie Filmmakers,
Please never ever again let a movie be made that David Mamet wrote. He is by far the most overrated writer in the English language. Steps must be taken...he must be stopped. Please stop the madness. Let him GO to the movies, sure, let him watch what other screenwriters have written, but please don't let him write any more movies. The industry can't take much more of this.
Thanks,
A Movie Fan

Seems the legions of people who agree with you are busy trashing some other film.

I think you forgot to say, "He is by far the most overrated poster in the English language in his own head."

+1 agree~

I have nothing against Whiplashkid999, but your comment is pur and simple the best I saw on imdb in the last few years. Man you're good, really good, have a long and interesting live and the possibility to bring us more commentaries like this one.

If you don't like Mamet, don't watch his stuff.

I'm not an actor. I just play one on TV.

I am really intrigued by this. What don't like about his writing?
Sure this film fell apart by the time they got to the fight. But prior to the that the script was extraordinary good, i my humble opinion. I mean it was GGGR with fighting but still....

Do tell.

funny OP. I want to like Mamet more, but sometimes.... (I agree with another poster he is far more proficient as writer than a director).

It makes me sad that people are trashing this guy when his work is really great, red belt is a great movie by the way, watch it.

Why are people going out of their way to trash this guy?

To be honest what I think it is is that, there are too many movies these days, the market is saturated, so there is an organization that is there simply to create fake hype, fake negativity in the film community in order to steer the masses and their money towards and away from certain movies. Not only is it about money but perception, hollywood likes to dictate what is and what isn't a good film, and it seems certain hollywooders are jealous of Mamet's success and so there are people out to make him look bad.

For me, it's that I get told he's a great writer, so I pay attention to the writing... When you're analysing every word that comes out of the characters mouths, it's hard to get involved in the story.

For me; great writing is florid, but goes hand-in-hand with everything else so that you don't notice it's part of the experience... If you name some of the classic scenes in cinema that are well written, it isn't just the writing that stands out, every other element from acting to directing to art direction comes together to make the scene what it is; I honestly feel however that if I were just given one of his scripts to read, it would bore me out of my head...

Glengarry Glen Ross was an actors movie, not a writers one, and those actors there are all good enough to direct themselves. It just feels to me as if Mamet tries to do too much when he both writes and directs...

... and don't get me started on his purported use of a metronome to impose 'rhythm'... Any process so 'regimented' is an instant turn-off for me, and that goes from Shakespeare with iambic pentameter, right up to Mamet... Truth in writing comes from observation, not from imposing artificial rules that you think mirror genuine interaction... What real person measures syllables when they speak?!

I'm sure he's more intelligent than I, but I can unashamedly admit that Mr. Mamet's popularity goes way over my head...

Dear Hollywood and Indie Filmmakers,
Whiplashkid999 must be stopped from going to grown-up movies.
Please come out with a rating like, 'NFPT-Not for Pre-Teens: 12 and under are not going to understand and appreciate'. ANY movie that has that rating added to the regular rating is not a movie for whiplashkid999.
Or how about "MHLEITRW-Must have life experiance in the real world-Not understandable to those who think the real world works in straight lines and all actions and events are blatantly explained to you by everyone involved."
Good luck Indie Filmmakers (although I suspect mainstream Hollywood will have no trouble making product for whiplashkidd999 to consume).
